Spider-Noir: Why Nicolas Cage Is Playing Ben Reilly Instead of Peter Parker

It’s now known why Nicolas Cage is portraying Ben Reilly, and not Peter Parker, in the Spider-Noir series.

The new Spider-Noir series from Sony Pictures Television will launch this spring on MGM+ and Prime Video. Created by showrunners Steve Lightfoot and Oren Uziel, the show expands on the alternate Spider-Man universes first introduced in the 2018 animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Nicolas Cage played Spider-Noir in the animated film Into the Spider-Verse, but that character was an alternate version of Peter Parker. Now, it’s been confirmed that Cage will be playing Ben Reilly in the live-action show, a clone of Peter Parker who is known as the Scarlet Spider in Marvel Comics.

Why is Nicolas Cage playing Ben Reilly instead of Peter Parker in Spider-Noir?

I was reading Esquire recently, and they spoke to some of the people making the show. They explained why Nicolas Cage is playing the character Ben instead of Peter – it’s interesting to hear the reasoning behind that casting choice!

As a film fan, I always thought Peter Parker really felt like a typical high schooler – young, energetic, and still figuring things out. But when I heard about this new take on Ben Reilly, the creators said his history allows him to be portrayed as much more of a cynical, world-weary character, and that makes a lot of sense. It’s a backstory that gives them a lot of flexibility to go in a darker direction.

According to executive producer Phil Lord, this version of Spider-Man is a far cry from the one audiences are used to seeing in films. He’s older, more cynical, and willing to resort to violence – even when intoxicated.

Chris Miller, who is also a producer on the project, explained that the character had already experienced a major disappointment related to Chinatown a long time ago.

Uziel explained that Ben’s history will continue to affect him, leading to a Spider-Man unlike any fans have seen before. Miller suggested there’s a story-based reason why Ben, and not Peter, is the main character, stating, “The reason he’s named Ben Riley is explained, but we won’t reveal more than that.”
