Spider-Noir’s 2026 Series Will Be a Different Genre Than Expected

So, I’m a big Spider-Man fan, and I just heard some interesting news about the upcoming Spider-Noir series on Amazon Prime Video. Apparently, this isn’t going to be a continuation of the version of Spider-Noir we all loved in Into the Spider-Verse – it’s a completely fresh take. Nicolas Cage is back as the character, which is awesome, but it’s a totally different version of the 1930s detective. What’s also interesting is that Amazon has given it a TV-14 rating, which is the highest rating any live-action Spider-Man project has ever received. It sounds like it’s going to be a pretty mature take on the character when it hits in May!

A new report from Gold Derby reveals that Sony and Amazon Prime Video are entering Spider-Noir into comedy award categories. This is unexpected, as Amazon officially lists the series as belonging to the action, drama, and suspense genres.

This year’s Emmy Awards, honoring television shows released between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026, will barely include the new series Spider-Noir. Its eight episodes dropped on Amazon Prime Video on May 27th, making it eligible. The show will now compete with Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Wonder Man, and Peacemaker for the comedy awards.

The first trailer for Spider-Noir definitely shows the show will be a suspenseful and dramatic series, just as Amazon Prime Video has promised. It feels quite serious and even unsettling at times, and Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Ben Reilly is noticeably more creepy than Tom Holland’s version of Peter Parker.

I’m so excited about Spider-Noir! Daniel Richtman has been teasing that it’s going to be much bigger than anyone anticipates – he even said it’s ‘huge’! Apparently, there’s a seriously epic fight planned between Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man and Jack Huston’s Sandman, which suggests the movie has a lot more going on than what we’ve seen in the trailer. I can’t wait to see what they’ve cooked up!

I’ve heard the show is incredibly popular, much more than most people anticipated. The fight between the main character and Sandman is said to be amazing.

Spider-Noir’s Comedy Genre Is a Strange Decision

The upcoming series, Spider-Noir, will feature Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a weary and world-worn private investigator haunted by his past as a superhero. Set in a dark and dangerous 1930s New York, the show will delve into the city’s criminal underbelly, with Brendan Gleeson playing Silvermane, the main villain.

The show doesn’t seem like a comedy based on the description and the first trailer, which has a serious tone. However, with two months still to go before it airs and only one trailer released, it’s possible Spider-Noir is saving the humor for later.

If Spider-Noir turns out to be surprisingly funny – more so than the initial trailers suggest – audiences will likely have a varied response. While Spider-Man stories often include humor, this particular detective-style version hasn’t typically been known for its jokes.

Sony and Amazon likely chose to submit Spider-Noir as a comedy for the Emmys, believing it would have a better chance of winning, even though the show isn’t strictly a comedy. However, fans won’t have to wait long to learn how the series will officially be categorized.

Despite its darker tone, Spider-Noir will still feature classic comic book action. Ben Reilly will battle Sandman and Electro – both returning villains from Spider-Man: No Way Home – and they’ll have all their familiar powers.
