Netflix is creating a new adult animated series about a famous Old West character, but with a unique twist. It combines the look of steampunk with scary supernatural elements. The show, called Bass X Machina, is coming out soon and stars an actor known from both Marvel and DC movies.
Bass X Machina receives Netflix release date, plot details & more
Netflix has announced that the adult animated series, Bass X Machina, will premiere on October 6th. The show features the voice talents of Brian Tyree Henry as Bass, alongside Janelle Monáe as Glory, Tati Gabrielle as Dana, Cree Summer as Ahni, Chaske Spencer as Lighthorse, Currie Graham as Rivenbark, and Starletta DuPois as Etta.
This show reimagines the American West as a world fueled by steam power and filled with danger. It follows a father who becomes a lawman, determined to shield his family from criminals, advanced technology gone wrong, and supernatural forces. But with every attempt to protect them, he risks driving his loved ones away.
Okay, so “Bass X Machina” definitely has a fascinating starting point – the legendary Bass Reeves, a true pioneer as one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals. Now, we just had a series on Paramount+ that stuck pretty closely to the historical facts of his life. But Netflix? They’ve gone in a completely different direction. They’ve taken Reeves and dropped him into this wild, steampunk-infused alternate reality, which is a bold move, to say the least. It’s a big departure from reality, and honestly, it’s that creative freedom that really sets this show apart.
Studio Mir, a South Korean animation studio, is responsible for bringing the series to life. They’re known for their work on popular animated shows like The Legend of Korra and the animated Witcher spin-off on Netflix.
As a huge cinema fan, I’m really excited about Henry’s involvement in this project. He’s not just acting, but also helping produce it, and he’s a fantastic voice actor – many Marvel fans will recognize him as the voice of Jefferson Davis from the Spider-Verse movies. He perfectly captured Miles Morales’ dad in both Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, and he’s even returning for the next one, Beyond the Spider-Verse! It’s cool to see an actor like him move between universes – he also had a role in the DC film Joker as Carl, the Arkham Clerk.
