Spielberg’s Most Misunderstood Sci-Fi Hits Prime The Same Day It Leaves Netflix

As a huge movie fan, I truly believe Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest filmmakers ever. He’s always been a game-changer, consistently creating some of the most memorable films of all time – and the numbers don’t lie! Everyone knows his classics like Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List, but I recently discovered one of his movies that I think deserves way more attention, and I’m so excited it’s now available to stream!

Spielberg’s popular 2018 sci-fi film, Ready Player One, briefly left Netflix in December 2025, just a month after joining the platform. Luckily for fans, it immediately became available on Amazon Prime Video. Based on the 2011 novel by Ernest Cline, the movie takes place in a chaotic future where people often escape into a virtual world called OASIS. When the creator of OASIS dies, a skilled gamer embarks on an incredible quest to inherit control of this expansive virtual universe.

Ready Player One Is a Criminally Underrated Movie

While Ready Player One was a huge commercial success, earning over $607 million worldwide, it’s surprisingly become somewhat forgotten. Although critics and audiences generally liked the film – it has a 71

While often described as a visually exciting but somewhat shallow adaptation of the novel, Ready Player One offers more than just ‘80s references and special effects. Beneath the surface, the film is surprisingly insightful, acting as a warning about the dangers of excessive nostalgia and the allure of escaping reality. The movie portrays a world so fixated on the past that it hinders progress, and where seeking refuge in virtual reality leads to lost connections and neglected real-life needs. Ultimately, Ready Player One delivers a powerful message about finding true happiness in the real world, all wrapped up in a thrilling adventure filled with fun references and action.

What’s New on Prime Video?

Prime Video added a bunch of new movies on December 30th, including Ready Player One, the Blade films, He’s Just Not That Into You, Practical Magic, and The Legend of Tarzan. This came after other December additions like Sinners, the original Mad Max, and the new Naked Gun movie. And there’s more to come in January! Starting January 1st, you’ll be able to stream films like Alien: Romulus, Forrest Gump, The Breakfast Club, and all the Mission Impossible movies.
