The filmmaker usually creates movies that mix insightful observations about society with thrilling crime stories and captivating entertainment. But his next film, Last Ride, is a departure from his typical work.
The scene unfolds just before a disaster, showing three friends riding in a cable car with the operator. They’re enjoying the classic song “London Calling” by The Clash, playing on an old cassette player. The friends are initially disappointed when the operator removes the cassette, but then pleasantly surprised to hear the song played through the cable car’s radio.
The boys begin dancing and jumping, and the cable car operator joins in, all with beautiful snowy mountains in the background. While the scene is playful, a feeling of unease builds as the camera shows the cable car floor and the teens continue jumping as it ascends.
The cable car suddenly stopped mid-ride, just after a warning about wolves appeared, leaving three teenagers and a man stranded in the air. They had been enjoying the ride moments before.
In the winter of 1982, three American boys are trapped in a cable car high in the Norwegian mountains. To make matters worse, they’re stuck with a dead body, and their ordeal happens during a unique astronomical event.
The film stars Roman Griffin Davis, Felix Jamieson, Charlie Price, Kristofer Hivju, and Gustaf Skarsgård.
Cinqué Lee, known for directing films like Nowhere Fast, returned to the director’s chair after a ten-year hiatus since his 2010 film, Burn Out the Day. The film also features Spike Lee (Malcolm X) and Todd Slater (Bloodsucking Bastards) as executive producers.
Originally called A Rare Grand Alignment, this survival thriller has faced several delays. It first premiered at the UK Film Festival in 2023, then screened at Beyond Fest in 2024, but never received a traditional theatrical release. Now, the film will be available to watch digitally.
Last Ride Is a Great Frozen Replacement
The new independent thriller is reminiscent of Adam Green’s psychological horror film. Starring Kevin Zegers, Shawn Ashmore, and Emma Bell, the movie follows three snowboarders who become stranded on a chairlift. When the lift stops mid-ride, they must find a way to descend the mountain before succumbing to the cold.
The 2010 film received a mixed reaction, earning a 64% approval rating from critics and a lower 48% from audiences, who particularly disliked the ending. While different from the popular animated film Frozen, the survival thriller Last Ride has the potential to become a beloved cult classic, much like Stranger Things, if it can deliver a satisfying conclusion.
Last Ride premieres on all digital platforms on Feb. 20.
