Spirit Halloween Roasts Saturday Night Live After Season 50 Sketch, "Irrelevant 50-Year-Old Show"

As a veteran gamer who’s witnessed the rise and fall of countless entertainment giants, I must say that the cat-and-mouse game between Spirit Halloween and Saturday Night Live is quite the spectacle! It’s rare to see such bold moves from brands, especially one as seasonal as Spirit.

During its Season 50 premiere, Saturday Night Live featured Spirit Halloween in a sketch, but instead of chuckling along, Spirit Halloween took to Twitter on Monday to respond. They shared SNL’s sketch and added a Spirit Halloween-themed costume labeled “SNL 50: The Anniversary Season.” The description was quite sharp, implying the show as being “irrelevant” with “declining ratings.” In a rather bold caption, they challenged SNL, saying, “We excel at resurrecting things from the dead @nbcsnl.” You can find their reaction below.

The intricacies of the costume are quite sarcastic or biting. The label on the packaging states “Ironically connected to a half-century-old TV program. Features outdated references, unrecognized actors, and dwindling viewership.” This remark is in response to a skit during Saturday night’s premiere of SNL, where they parodied an advertisement for a seasonal store, making fun of Spirit Halloween appearing in vacant stores only six weeks before Halloween, just when the fall season begins.

In a voiceover, Heidi Gardner remarks, “While things are thriving in Wall Street, Main Street communities are facing hardships. We see closed stores, deserted businesses, and vacant parking lots… It can seem like no one is paying attention during tough times, but help is indeed arriving. And when others retreat, we step forward.” The sketch then criticizes Spirit Halloween for only being open for six weeks before vanishing, as well as questioning the quality of their merchandise.

As a big fan, let me share that the Spirit Halloween sketch wasn’t the only contentious piece in Saturday Night Live‘s Season 50 opener. During the Weekend Update segment, the star, Bowen Yang, donned the role of viral baby pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng, which was a nod to singer Chappell Roan. Recently, Roan has been in the news for criticizing fans who invade her personal space and had to cancel a performance at All Things Go Festival to focus on her well-being. In a social media post, she expressed, “I’m dealing with a lot of pressures right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health.

Last Saturday marked the start of Season 50 for Saturday Night Live, with Hacks star Jean Smart serving as host, and Jelly Roll as the musical guest. This season promises to bring Nate Bargatze, Ariana Grande, Michael Keaton, John Mulaney (among others) as hosts, along with musical performances by Coldplay, Stevie Nicks, Billie Eilish, and Chappell Roan. Meanwhile, Spirit Halloween, the seasonal retailer, has been a fixture since 1983 and is now open in communities across the nation.
