Splitgate 2 Creators Address Feedback as Player Numbers Reach New Low: “Mistakes Were Made”

Approximately one month following its complete rollout, the player base for the free-to-play multiplayer portal shooter game, “Splitgate 2,” seems to be experiencing a significant drop. According to data from Steamdb, the number of simultaneous players on Steam dropped below 1,000 this week for the first time. This is an almost 96% decrease from the peak of 25,785 concurrent Steam players it had shortly after its official launch on June 6.

Supporters of Splitgate have been voicing more critical opinions about the game’s launch, its underwhelming aspects, and technical issues on social networks. This has led to a reaction from the community manager of Splitgate 2, known as Brodrian on Reddit. In response to a post requesting a re-launch of Splitgate 2, Brodrian assured players that enhancements are forthcoming.

Brodrian showed understanding for the players’ annoyances by acknowledging “errors occurred” and promised the fanbase that the development squad was carefully considering all feedback. Although the game has encountered difficulties, Brodrian made it clear that the Splitgate 2 team is determined to keep going. It seems like the team is working diligently on fixing current issues while also brainstorming strategies to draw in more players in the future.

Critics found fault with the game’s sparse launch, particularly since it included a Battle Royale Mode that split opinion among followers. As player numbers decrease, recent assessments suggest that Battle Royale games frequently include automated players, and the wait for matches can be excessively prolonged. Nevertheless, even with its problems, supporters of the series remain hopeful about its future success and are disheartened by how events have unfolded thus far.

It’s possible that some issues faced by players of the game could be connected to the political controversy it encountered on social media during its launch. The game’s creator, Ian Proulx, who is also CEO of 1047 Games, wore a “Make FPS Great Again” hat at Summer Game Fest, which sparked criticism online. Initially, Proulx defended his action, but later issued an apology, which further enraged both sides of the debate.

In a three-minute video shared on Reddit titled “No Excuses, Apologies,” Proulx apologized for wearing the controversial hat and didn’t expect the level of backlash that ensued. Additionally, he clarified that the inclusion of the Battle Royale mode in the post was long-planned as part of the game series’ vision.

In his own words, Proulx expressed that from the start, the goal was to develop an exceptional game offering various play styles (arenas, battle royale, map creator, onslaught). The concept for a Splitgate-style battle royale sparked in his mind five years ago. However, he was determined to bring it to life only if it would innovate the genre. Consistently, the aim has been to produce an arena shooter hybrid with battle royale elements that truly embodies Splitgate’s essence.

As the creators of Splitgate 2 work diligently to correct any issues, we’ll have to wait and see what strategies they might employ to attract players once more. If their aim is to continue providing the game, a potential re-launch could be on the horizon.
