The follow-up to the unexpectedly popular free-to-play game from 2019, titled Splitgate 2, was released in June, catching many gamers off guard. However, the launch period spanned only a few weeks before the game was reverted back to its beta phase. This latest event marks another challenge for the game and its development team in their ongoing journey.
1047 Games, famous for creating the “Splitgate” series (and nothing else as of now), is making some staff reductions and will be closing the servers for the initial “Splitgate” game this week in an effort to save money. However, they are investigating offline play possibilities for those who wish to continue enjoying the game. The studio did not disclose a specific number of employees affected by these changes in their statement.
Regarding Splitgate 2, this is just one aspect of the problem. In a statement penned by co-founder Ian Proulx from 1047 Games, they acknowledged the negative feedback and unfavorable response the game received at its launch. They admitted that they failed to meet expectations, which is why they’ve decided to go back to beta stage to continue refining it.
Initially, problems like bugs, absent ranked mode upon release, and expensive cosmetic items sparked gamers’ disapproval, which was acknowledged. Sadly, this feedback resulted in the game being temporarily withdrawn from service.
Based on your feedback, we realize now that we released ‘Splitgate 2’ prematurely. Our ambitions were high, and in our eagerness to present the game to you, we took on more than we could handle. As a result, we’ve decided it’s best to return to the beta phase for further refinement.
1047 Games opted for a surprising approach by withholding certain game modes from players prior to launch, but this strategy turned out to be met with criticism. However, upon its re-launch, the game will benefit from numerous adjustments made collaboratively by developers and the gaming community based on valuable feedback received. Among the hidden modes, a Battle Royale mode was one of them.
Proulx openly acknowledged perusing an extensive, notorious Reddit discussion brimming with criticisms regarding the game. This provided them with a fair understanding of the necessary adjustments to make in order for the game to better match the preferences of players.
Proulx faced criticism over his “Make FPS (First-Person Shooter) Games Great Again” cap, yet he declined to attribute the game’s negative response to the hat itself. In simpler terms, the CEO stated that this wouldn’t be a topic of discussion if the game were more successful.
Regrettably, it’s becoming quite frequent that layoffs occur within the gaming industry. Both large and small studios find themselves needing to reduce expenses and trim their workforce, with many closing altogether to help major publishers cut costs.
The team has yet to finalize a specific relaunch date, but they’re shooting for early 2026. For now, don’t expect Splitgate 2 to disappear from the scene. Game developer 1047 will continue to roll out the third season and some special events as part of its beta phase. As per Proulx, there have been challenging times for the original game in the past, but he’s optimistic about the coming months.
