Despite a recent relaunch, Splitgate is still facing challenges. It’s easily one of the most original multiplayer first-person shooters of the last ten years, cleverly combining elements from games like Halo and Portal. The result was a fast-paced arena shooter with a unique twist: portals that players could use for both movement and combat. This innovative concept was a hit when the game launched and continued to gain popularity after expanding to consoles in 2021. However, as the player base grew, so did their expectations.
1047 Games started as a small indie team, creating the game Splitgate while still in college. After Splitgate found success, they were able to bring on experienced game developers. Surprisingly, they then decided to stop updating Splitgate and instead focus on building a completely new sequel with all the features they envisioned. While the original game stayed online, it lost players due to the lack of continued support. The team’s attention was fully on Splitgate 2, which launched in 2025. Although the beta version was well-received, the full release faced criticism because of its microtransactions and how it was marketed.
Splitgate 2 Flops Amid Re-Launch

After a troubled launch, Splitgate 2 was essentially re-released as a beta version while the developers addressed major issues. It then re-launched as Splitgate: Arena Reloaded in December, but it hasn’t regained much of an audience. On Steam, the game briefly reached over 2,000 players after the re-launch, but that number has been consistently falling. Now, less than a month later, it’s struggling to maintain even 1,000 players at a time. We expect similar results on consoles.
Splitgate 2 isn’t doing well, and is now considered a failure. The game’s repeated delays and re-releases have likely caused fans to lose interest. It’s a shame, as the game itself is enjoyable, but it highlights the developers’ difficulty in sticking to a clear vision, making players hesitant to invest their time. The future of Splitgate 2 is uncertain, though 1047 Games will probably continue to support it. However, if player numbers stay low or decrease further, the game may not last much longer.
