Spooks and Marvel legends confirmed for all-new adaptation of beloved classic with “striking contemporary edge”

The beloved adventure novel Treasure Island is getting a modern update as a thrilling series aimed at today’s young audiences. David Oyelowo, known for Spooks, and Hayley Atwell, famous for Marvel’s Agent Carter, will both star in the show.

The new movie, based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story, will follow Jim Hawkins as he grows from a protected young boy into a brave and confident pirate.

Tom Sweet, a promising new actor known for his role as young Pip in Steven Knight’s Great Expectations, will play Jim. David Oyelowo will portray the intimidating yet charismatic pirate, Long John Silver.

Hayley Atwell, known for her roles in Mission: Impossible and reportedly considered for Marvel’s Avengers, plays Jim’s mother, Bess. Her quick thinking and bold choices lead Jim to uncover secrets that threaten them both.

I’m really excited about the cast of Treasure Island! Jack Huston, who I loved in Boardwalk Empire, is playing Aaron Graham – a seemingly charming but definitely sneaky British agent. And Tomer Capone, fantastic as always (especially in The Boys), is taking on the role of the world-weary sailor Billy Bones. Both actors are perfect for these parts, I think!

Jim is forced to mature quickly when he and his mother struggle to survive on a dangerous journey filled with changing loyalties, hidden truths, and constant threats.

The story unfolds across the Atlantic, from a Caribbean about to explode into revolution to the frightening Skeleton Island. It follows Jim as he finds himself in a much more complicated and perilous world than he knew, where he’ll be challenged to prove his strength, stay true to those he cares about, and discover who he really is – all for a chance at a great reward.

Sebastian Cardwell, a senior content executive at Paramount UK, said their new version of Treasure Island is a fresh and immersive take on a classic story loved by many for years.

As a film buff, I was really impressed with this adaptation. It didn’t just retell the story, it brought a surprising amount of emotional weight to it, and felt incredibly modern and relevant. It really breathed new life into Stevenson’s classic!

Robert Murphy, who wrote for the show McDonald & Dodds, created the series. Jeremy Lovering (known for Slow Horses), William McGregor (His Dark Materials), and Paul Walker (Riviera) each directed episodes throughout the six-part season.
