As a dedicated manga enthusiast, I can’t help but sing the praises of two extraordinary titles that have graced the pages of Shonen Jump+ (Spy x Family) and Weekly Shonen Jump (Sakamoto Days). Both of these series have captivated readers worldwide and even earned their places on the small screen with impressive anime adaptations. Despite differences in popularity, both series share a common thread: they’re action-packed stories filled with covert missions, assassins, and spies.
Sakamoto Days, adored by many Weekly Shonen Jump fans, stands out for its exceptional fight choreography and innovative premise. On the other hand, Spy x Family, a hit in the Shonen Jump+ world, captivates with its unique blend of action and slice-of-life elements, making it particularly appealing to casual viewers.
In the Summer 2025 anime lineup, we were treated to the second season of Sakamoto Days’ anime, while Spy x Family fans eagerly await the premiere of its third season in Fall 2025. Whether you prefer high-octane action sequences or heartwarming everyday moments, there’s something for everyone in these two outstanding series!
Both shows, “Spy x Family” and “Sakamoto Days”, start off with familiar family themes, but each takes a unique twist. “Spy x Family” revolves around a sham family that’s surprisingly endearing due to Anya, as they maintain their cover of an ordinary, affectionate family while secretly working to preserve peace between two feuding nations. On the other hand, “Sakamoto Days” centers on Taro Sakamoto, a retired assassin who found tranquility after falling in love, but his peaceful life is disrupted when a bounty is placed on him, forcing him to uncover the culprit. Although both series are captivating, “Spy x Family” excels in one area that “Sakamoto Days” does not.
Spy x Family Still Focuses Consistently on Family, Unlike Sakamoto Days
In contrast to Sakamoto Days, which primarily revolves around battles with occasional heartfelt family moments, Spy x Family consistently focuses on the familial dynamics of its characters. The series showcases the Forger family’s unity as Anya binds them together, Loid prioritizes their happiness for his mission, and Yor goes to great lengths for their well-being. Throughout the story, we’ve witnessed numerous challenges faced by the main characters, making it an engaging journey.
The narrative maintains its central theme amidst various dramatic sequences, keeping true to what viewers initially expected. Contrastingly, Sakamoto Day previously combined action and family dynamics, yet now it concentrates solely on actions, minimizing the family scenes significantly. Earlier episodes showcased frequent family gatherings, but this trend has changed noticeably.
The story keeps its main idea while adding exciting action scenes, just like before. However, Sakamoto Day now focuses more on actions and less on family matters compared to earlier episodes.
The plot underwent a significant shift in the JCC Transfer Exam Arc, starting from Chapter 55, and it’s never been quite the same since then. Characters like Aoi, Hana, and even Lu have taken on more of a supporting role, appearing intermittently when the story needs a brief respite from continuous battles. While focusing on action is beneficial for a WSJ series, the initial impression given by the series was slightly different.
