As fans eagerly anticipate Season 3, the manga of “Spy x Family” has been gradually shedding light on one of its major enigmas, Project Apple. Since the series’ inception, viewers have been intrigued about the source of Anya’s psychic abilities. However, it wasn’t until Bond entered the picture that fans found potential clues to help solve this mystery. Project Apple has since sparked numerous theories linking not just Anya and Bond, but also Operation Strix’s primary objective, Donovan Desmond. Recent developments by Melinda have further solidified the case for Donovan being a telepath. In an unexpected turn of events, “Spy x Family” recently revealed that both Donovan and Anya are connected to Project Apple.
In Chapter 122 of the popular series “Spy x Family”, Loid Forger and his daughter, Anya, visit Professor Authen and Donovan Desmond under the guise of investigating their past connection. As their visit concludes, although Loid considers Professor Authen insignificant as a threat, the story takes an unexpected twist. The chapter leaves fans stunned as Professor Authen identifies Anya as ‘Test Subject #7’. Due to his dementia, he jots down a note reminding himself about Anya, Project Apple, and Donovan Desmond, which could be the long-awaited evidence connecting these characters that fans have been anticipating.
Spy x Family Finally Confirms Anya and Donovan’s Connection to Project Apple

In Chapter 122, Professor Authen doesn’t disclose much incriminating information. However, he does admit to knowing Donovan Desmond when he was the Prime Minister. What he reveals is limited; they met only a few times and Authen even struggles recalling his name. Furthermore, instead of being deployed to active combat during the war, Authen claims he was tasked with research related to their shared field. Their conversations were mostly about finding treatments for soldiers’ mental health issues and developing new medicines.
Based on the seemingly harmless discussions they’d had and Authen apparently not meeting Donovan again after resigning as Prime Minister, Anya and Loid assume that Authen was simply an innocent elderly man. However, in the evening, after Loid and Anya had left, Professor Authen experiences a fleeting moment of lucidity where his memories resurface. In this moment, he starts to wonder if Anya might indeed be Test Subject #7. He also makes a mental note to investigate whether Donovan Desmond is aware of Anya’s existence, and whether the operation could still be ongoing.
It seems the identity of this plan isn’t entirely clear, but based on the hints dropped in the series thus far, it’s not overly challenging to speculate, particularly since in the latest chapter, Authen jots down the term “Project” followed by what appears to be “Apple” and possibly “AP.” The “C” within brackets suggests that Project Apple might have been one of several such projects, with Anya, her mother, and Donovan Desmond potentially involved in this human-specific project labeled “C,” rather than animal-focused ones like Project Apple.
Professor Authen Might Just Be the Biggest Lead to Project Apple

From what we gather, Project Apple was an initiative spearheaded by the National Unity Party, of which Donovn Desmond is a member. The aim of this project was to develop intelligent animals, like Bond, for military applications. This seems strikingly reminiscent of Authen’s assertions that he was recruited by the government for related research during the war. This new understanding sheds light on Authen’s statement about devising techniques to help soldiers with neurosis. While it’s plausible that Authen’s research began with honorable intentions, his anxious behavior at the end of Chapter 122 suggests that he may have transgressed ethical boundaries in the process. Furthermore, these events seem to be weighing heavily on Professor Authen even today.
Despite all that’s been discussed, it remains uncertain why Authen only recently recognized Anya. Given his dementia, this might be plausible. It also remains unclear if he will act on his suspicions now that he knows about Anya’s secret. This development could provide Loid with a new clue as well. So far, Anya’s past as a test subject and her connection to Project Apple have been kept confidential, even from WISE. However, with Authen hot on the trail, it seems Anya may not be able to hide her abilities for much longer. This revelation would also affect Donovan. With the plot thickening in Spy x Family, this could be an ideal moment to catch up on the manga before Season 3 debuts this fall.
In the new version, I’ve aimed to keep the meaning and tone consistent while making it more concise and easier for readers to understand.
