It’s been around 15 years since *The 3rd Birthday* came out on the PSP, and whether you see it as a proper sequel to *Parasite Eve* is debatable. (We enjoyed it, though opinions are quite divided.)
Honestly, it’s looking like Square Enix has pretty much shelved this series for now. But hey, at least we can usually count on a Chinese developer to step in and keep the dream alive when they do nothing!
The Chongqing-based development team IceSitruuna has revealed their new game, Parasite Mutant, which is heavily inspired by the classic PlayStation 1 title from Square Enix. It’s currently scheduled for release on PS5 in 2026.

Here’s how the blurb describes it:
Parasite Mutant is a sci-fi horror role-playing game taking place far in the future. The player controls Nova, a psychic agent sent to investigate a deserted island city overrun with terrifying monsters. Little does she know, this mission will drastically alter her life.
Interestingly, the announcement also details the battle system, called Active Time Chains. It’s a new take on the Active Time Bar from the original *Parasite Eve*. Like the first game, you can move and dodge freely, but you have to wait for a meter to fill up before you can attack.
The game also boasts a unique anime art style that aims for a ‘semi-realistic’ look, and the developers are adding a CRT filter to give it a nostalgic late 90s vibe. Players can unlock different outfits, and the game will support New Game Plus for continued play after finishing the story.
So, this looks really good! While we’d love to see Aya Brea make a proper comeback, this will definitely satisfy fans in the meantime.
