A new role-playing game from Square Enix is receiving positive feedback from players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It’s also available on the Nintendo eShop, but without user reviews, it’s hard to say how Switch and Switch 2 owners are enjoying it. Console players seem to love the game, but PC players on Steam aren’t having the same experience.
If you enjoyed classic RPGs on the NES in the 1980s, you already know how important the original Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II were. However, many modern gamers on platforms like Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC weren’t playing games back then. For those new to the series, the recently released Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake might not be your cup of tea. While updated with modern visuals, these games still feel very much like 1980s RPGs. The genre has evolved a lot since then, and it can be difficult to appreciate these older titles if you didn’t grow up with them. If you did play these games back in the day, though, this remake is sure to bring back some great memories.
User Reviews
Players on Xbox seem to be loving the remakes, giving them almost perfect scores on the Xbox Store after 155 reviews. PlayStation users also generally enjoy the game, with a 4.69 out of 5 rating after 277 reviews – a score that matches its 84 on Metacritic. Overall, console players are having a great time revisiting this classic RPG, but PC players aren’t as impressed.
The game has a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, meaning around 72% of over 100 players recommend it. However, the negative feedback isn’t about technical issues; it’s that the remakes still feel very old-fashioned. If you’re not a fan of classic RPGs, you likely won’t enjoy these Square Enix titles. While they look updated, the gameplay hasn’t changed much and remains rooted in older design philosophies.
In our review of this new RPG collection, we noted that the initial game is quite simple. Still, we had a lot of fun with it overall, and the updates make the two older games much more enjoyable to play in 2025.
