It’s commonly understood that many game developers from the ’90s often misplaced or lost the original source code for their games, yet such occurrences are seldom officially verified.
During an interview with the PlayStation Blog, Final Fantasy Tactics‘ director Kazutoyo Maehiro revealed that Square Enix can no longer use the original PS1 game’s primary data. This means they had to create the upcoming remake, The Ivalice Chronicles, from the ground up.
While it may seem reckless, he explained:
Back then, this approach was standard practice. We lacked the advanced resource management tools we have now, so we developed games primarily by replacing the old code with new ones whenever we found a bug to fix or needed to incorporate a new programming language.

Square Enix contemplated replicating the initial launch, a move that would let them adapt the game as it was back in 1997.
However, it required more detailed adjustments and enhancements, thus the best course of action became a fresh beginning.
Instead of using an emulator to reproduce the original game as planned, we opted for a different approach because it wouldn’t enable us to make fine-tuned adjustments, even if our aim was to recreate the original. Upon careful examination, we decided that the most effective way to preserve the authenticity of the game while making it suitable for modern play would be to rebuild it from scratch.
In case you’re familiar, The Ivalice Chronicles offers two modes of play: Classic mode, which gives you an authentic PS1 gameplay feel, and an updated, modernized Enhanced mode.
To begin with, the team initially focused on rebuilding the Classic mode. Subsequently, they moved on to developing the Enhanced edition. This is truly an outstanding accomplishment, undeniably requiring immense effort.
After thoroughly revamping the game, the developer has made numerous enhancements, incorporating convenience elements such as save points and even reworking significant aspects of the storyline. This includes adding fresh dialogues and voice-overs, along with an updated user interface design.
We’re eagerly anticipating that the final version will provide the ultimate approach to play one of the best strategy RPGs ever created. This remastered edition is set for release on September 30th, available on both PS5 and PS4. We’re thrilled that Square Enix has taken the time to rejuvenate this timeless classic.
