Square Enix quietly released a remastered version of a role-playing game originally for the Nintendo 3DS on PC and Xbox Series X. It wasn’t released on Nintendo Switch 2 because it came out on that console last year. PlayStation and the original Switch are still missing from this release. It’s unclear how many players on PC and Xbox Series X will be interested in a remastered version of a game that first came out on the 3DS 14 years ago, but the developers, Cattle Call, and publisher, Square Enix, are about to find out.
Last June, when the Nintendo Switch 2 launched, a remastered version of Bravely Default Flying Fairy (known simply as Bravely Default in many western countries) was released. Now, less than a year later, this remastered version is becoming available on other gaming systems.
Square Enix’s 2012 3DS RPG
If you’re unfamiliar, Bravely Default originally launched in 2012, developed by Silicon Studio – a different team than the one working on this updated version. It was a critical hit on the 3DS, earning an 85 on Metacritic and becoming one of the highest-rated games on the platform that year. A sequel, Bravely Default 2, followed in 2021 for Nintendo Switch and PC. While still unavailable on Xbox or PlayStation, that might change, especially for Xbox, now that the first game is being released on more platforms through this remaster. Regardless, the Bravely Default series has now sold over four million copies across the original game, its sequel, and this updated version.
This updated version of the game features sharper HD graphics, improved gameplay, and brand new minigames. Players on Xbox Series X and PC can get it for a special launch price of $31.99, a 20% discount from the regular price of $39.99.
We still haven’t heard anything about Bravely Default 3, but this updated version hints that Square Enix might not be finished with the series. It’s unclear if this remaster is a way to gauge interest in a potential third game, or if a new game is already being made. Either way, it seems unlikely this remaster is happening for no reason. Plus, with the original 3DS game becoming harder to find and more expensive, it’s great to see these games becoming more widely available.
