Square Enix Reportedly Bringing Back PS2 RPG Series

Square Enix is planning to revive a classic role-playing game series originally released on the PlayStation 2. An announcement about its return is expected later this month, potentially at either the upcoming PlayStation State of Play event or at Tokyo Game Show. This news comes from Dusk Golem, a reliable source known for accurate leaks about games like *Resident Evil*, who is now sharing information about Square Enix.

A source familiar with the industry recently shared that the unexpected release of the *Drakengard* soundtrack on Steam and Spotify last week wasn’t a coincidence. It seems to be building anticipation for an announcement coming later this month related to the series. While it’s unclear if the announcement will be for a new *Drakengard* game or a *NieR* game – rumors of a *NieR Automata* sequel have been circulating – it’s worth noting that *NieR* originated as a spin-off of the *Drakengard* franchise.

About Drakengard

The story of the *Drakengard* and *NieR* games is a bit complex. It began in 2003 with *Drakengard*, developed by Cavia and published by Square Enix. Cavia, however, is no longer around, having closed in 2010. The original *Drakengard*, released only for the PlayStation 2, didn’t initially get great reviews, but it later gained a dedicated following. A sequel, *Drakengard 2*, followed in 2005. Then, in 2010, came *NieR*, a spin-off game. Both *Drakengard* titles and *NieR* were created by the same teams. *Drakengard 3* was released in 2013, but by that point Cavia had shut down. This game was developed by Access Games, another Japanese studio that still operates, though mostly focuses on porting and supporting other games.

For a long time, the *NieR* series was only popular with a small group of dedicated fans. That changed in 2016 with the release of *NieR: Automata*, developed by PlatinumGames. It was a critically acclaimed game that sold millions of copies, and it helped bring the *NieR* series into the mainstream. However, the original *Drakengard* series remains less well-known. Since *Automata*, there have been two more releases: *NieR Reincarnation*, a mobile game, and *NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…*, a remastered version of the first *NieR* game, both released in 2021.
