Squid Game Finale Brings Season 2’s Best Character Back From the Dead

The hit show Squid Game concluded its run on Netflix following four years and three seasons. However, in an inventive twist, Season 2 managed to resurrect its most captivating character from the previous season, the flamboyant drug-using rapper, Thanos (named after a Marvel character), before the series reached its finale. The second season of Squid Game, which premiered last year and garnered as much attention on Netflix as its debut did, introduced us to a fresh set of games and competitors who fought for survival. Among them, Thanos stood out as the most memorable character.

The worldwide sensation of Squid Game Season 2 left viewers captivated by Thanos’ character, even though he didn’t survive the season. This led to speculation that he wouldn’t reappear in Season 3 due to his popularity. However, creators of Squid Game managed to bring Thanos back for more action in Season 3 without violating the realistic premise of its universe. Fans will ultimately decide if this return was successful or not, but beware: Major spoilers for Squid Game Season 3 are coming up!

How Thanos Comes Back in Squid Game Season 3

In the closing stages of the second season, Thanos met his end at the hands of Lee Myung-gi in a fight, which suggested he wouldn’t reappear for cameos in the final episodes since his story was wrapped up. However, due to Thanos’s larger-than-life persona, he lingered on through other characters. Initially, it seemed insignificant as Nam-gyu, one of Thanos’s surviving associates, amused audiences with a comical impersonation of him. Later on, though, a completely new character brought Thanos back to life in a more substantial way.

In Squid Game Season 3, Park Min-su takes control of his life following the bullying by Nam-gyu and Thanos during previous games. During the turmoil of the fourth game, Min-su manages to obtain Thanos’ drug necklace and leads them both through the remaining contests. In the Sky Squid Game, Min-su experiences hallucinations and nearly falls from a high platform. It is here that he momentarily sees Thanos and Nam-gyu attempting to “pull him” towards his demise. Surprisingly, Thanos appears to have returned after his death.

Is Thanos’ Return a Success?

The return of Thanos will be a topic of discussion among Squid Game enthusiasts. While it may appear that this move was influenced by Thanos’ immense popularity during the second season, it’s important to note that Seasons 2 and 3 were produced concurrently. It seems unlikely that Hwang Dong-hyuk intentionally included Thanos in this moment merely as a nod to fans, as is evident from the scene itself, where Min-su is tormented by literal ghosts of his past within the game’s narrative.

In terms of continuity, this particular return isn’t so shocking given the narrative trajectory established by the initial two seasons. It’s also not unique, as it’s not the first time we see a deceased character reappear through such visions. Thanos, however, stands out due to his significant presence during the second season. His return serves more as an enjoyable wink to the fact that this character still manages to stir up trouble in others’ lives even after being supposedly killed off. Unlike any other character from Squid Game, Thanos leaves a lasting impression and creates such a profound impact.
