Squid Game Season 4 Cancelled Forever

*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for Squid Game season 3.*

Following an unexpected climax in season 3, numerous Squid Game viewers find themselves bewildered by the plot twists and famous guest appearance in the last episode, sparking curiosity about whether the finale lays groundwork for a possible sequel or spin-off.

Given the massive success of Squid Game, being hailed as one of Netflix’s top series ever, it’s not unexpected that they’ve already produced seasons 2 and 3, filmed consecutively. However, one may wonder if there are plans for even more seasons in the future.

Currently, it has been verified by the series mastermind Hwang Dong-hyuk that season 3 will mark the last chapter for this show. Similar to the climactic ending we’ve been waiting for, the series is now approaching its conclusion, with the words “Game Over” appearing on control room monitors in the final episode.

But why won’t Squid Game be returning for a fourth season? Read on to find out.

Why won’t there be a Squid Game season 4?

Earlier in July, the original writer of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, revealed that the show will conclude with its third and last season. In his message to fans, he expressed his great enthusiasm by saying: “I am thrilled to be writing this letter to share not only the release date for season 2 but also the exciting news about season 3, which marks the end of our journey.

He went on to say: “It’s exciting to watch the idea that sparked the creation of a fresh Squid Game develop and come to fruition by the end of this tale.

Fundamentally, Dong-hyuk decided to expand the series by adding two more seasons following the initial success, which was primarily aimed at providing a satisfying conclusion to the fans regarding Gi-hun’s storyline. It’s common for directors to envision a specific number of seasons for their main narrative, and it seems that Gi-hun’s story within Squid Game is no exception to this rule.

While crafting the narratives for seasons 2 and 3, I found it essential to devise an ending that would tie up both the series’ plot and Gi-hun’s personal journey effectively.

Let’s quickly conclude Gi-hun’s story and deliver a key point to the viewers. The idea I want to express is that when we only focus on personal gains, neglecting self-control, sacrifice, or bearing costs, and fail to collaborate with others, we risk having no future ahead.

Apart from keeping the series concise, the extensive strain Squid Game creator Dong-hyuk has experienced during its production is another significant reason for possibly concluding the series.

Dong-hyuk shared with The Hollywood Reporter: “I’ve felt a sense of relief from the fears and weight associated with it all, but for the past six years, there hasn’t been a single day that I haven’t thought about Squid Game.

For the last six years, this has been my primary focus. To accept that it’s time to move on, I must confess, there’s a feeling of loss or emptiness inside me. However, if season three receives as much affection as season one did, I believe I’ll find less void in my heart when saying farewell.

Regarding a fourth season of the franchise, Dong-hyuk has clearly stated his disinterest, yet there might be possibilities for a separate series, a spin-off, instead.

As a devoted admirer, I shared with The Hollywood Reporter my thoughts: “I believe the narrative reached a satisfying resolution, one that doesn’t necessitate additional chapters. Consequently, I find little appeal in crafting a sequel that delves into events beyond the established ending.

As a passionate fan, if given the opportunity to explore new territory, I’d prefer to delve into the untold stories of the time gap between seasons one and two. However, it’s all speculation at this point, so whether and how a spinoff will materialize remains to be seen.

It’s been whispered that a Squid Game sequel, possibly taking place in the U.S., might be in the works, and Cate Blanchett’s brief appearance in season 3’s finale certainly fuels speculation that there’s a lot more narrative potential to tap into.

As unconfirmed reports persist, there are indications that director David Fincher might be taking charge of the American spin-off. Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Ddakji in Los Angeles during season 3 seems to strengthen this speculation, given her prior collaboration with Fincher.

It’s currently quiet from Netflix about this topic, but it’s clear that Cate Blanchett’s unexpected role as one of the Recruiters hints at Squid Game potentially expanding to other locations. Although production in Korea has ceased, the series finale does suggest a possible spin-off for the future, so we’ll need to stay tuned to find out if this idea becomes reality.

During an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Lee Byung-hun hinted at a possible spin-off for the character Front Man, creating a buzz among viewers. At the moment, there are no updates about any more Squid Game spin-offs, but given its success on the streaming platform, it’s likely that we haven’t seen the last of Squid Game.
