Attention: This information reveals significant plot twists from the BBC iPlayer episode of EastEnders that aired on Wednesday, 16th July 2025. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
In the most recent episode of EastEnders, Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) received groundbreaking news, which was orchestrated by her cherished Martin Fowler (James Bye).
As a mourning movie critic, I’ve been left reeling by the heart-wrenching events that unfolded at The Queen Vic this year. I still can’t believe that Martin, a beloved character in my mind, met his untimely end in February when tragedy struck and he was trapped amidst the rubble of the explosion. Now, as I watch Stacey struggle to pick up the pieces of her shattered life and grapple with the profound sorrow that his loss has brought, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of empathy for her journey towards healing. It’s a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the deep emotional impact that television can have on its viewers.
Following Ian Beale (performed by Adam Woodyatt) restarting Martin’s produce stand on the market, which subsequently brought in the lively character Oscar Branning (portrayed by Pierre Moullier), Ian became determined to acquire The Vic.
In an attempt to outsmart him, Stacey and her cousin Kat Moon, portrayed by Jessie Wallace, devised a plan where they feigned winning a huge £100k on a lottery scratch card. They claimed that this windfall would allow them to buy the shop from Vinny Panesar, who went along with the charade as well.

The pair hoped this would wind Ian up enough not to go ahead with his own offer for the pub.
On the following day, Stacey and Kat unveiled their joke to Ian, who gleamed with excitement at the thought of a swift transaction and a position as the pub’s landlord behind the bar.
Simultaneously, Stacey and Eve Panesar-Unwin (Heather Peace) felt uneasy as a man standing near a clipboard lingered around their home. Believing him to be a debt collector or an enforcer of some kind, Eve bravely approached the man to inquire about his business.
However, when Stacey suggested she’d make her late payments up shortly, the individual revealed he was instead representing a life insurance firm.
Martin designated Stacey as the beneficiary of his life insurance policy, which turned out to be exactly the sum she had recently exaggerated about possessing.
Stacey was floored that her late soulmate had even taken out a policy, as Martin hated paperwork.

Despite feeling reassured about their financial care, Stacey acknowledged that no situation could ever compensate for the loss of Martin.
In a conversation with Kat, Stacey shared her plan to donate funds to Jasmine Armfield, who is Martin’s eldest daughter, and his youngest child, Roman Allen.
Moreover, she expressed a desire to invest a significant amount, and astonished Kat by proposing that they become business partners. This partnership would enable them to purchase The Vic together!
Will the Slaters become the new owners, or will Ian get his wish and claim the place first?
