It’s been well-known that Star Citizen is one of the most costly games ever created, but its funding continues to grow at an impressive rate. As of today, the game has received $885,435,950 in funding, and it’s projected to surpass $900 million and eventually reach $1 billion.
Originally announced in 2012, Star Citizen has been funded primarily through contributions from its community. Though still under development after more than ten years, the first playable version of the game was released in 2016. Since then, Cloud Imperium Games has consistently updated Star Citizen, with a significant update, Alpha 4.0, launching earlier this year.
The latest update introduces a key improvement: the game can now distribute its workload across multiple servers without players noticing any difference. This means that if one server experiences problems, it won’t disrupt the entire game – only players on that specific server will be affected.
Cloud Imperium Games announced a new system where each planet, landing zone, and major space station now runs on its own dedicated game server. According to Chris Roberts, this makes server transitions seamless and unnoticeable, even with the game’s detailed graphics. Essentially, the performance and stability of each area are now handled independently, improving the overall experience.
The studio has announced that its main goal for Star Citizen development in 2025 is making the game more playable. They’ll be concentrating on three key areas to achieve this: improving how the game runs (performance), fixing bugs and crashes (stability), and adding more things to do (content).
At the start of the new year, Chris Roberts explained that the main goal for all of the Star Citizen teams is to make the game more playable. This means focusing on three key areas: how well the game runs (performance), how often it crashes or has issues (stability), and the amount of things to do in the game (content). The team recognizes that the live version of the game needs to be much more dependable and consistent, and they’re committed to making that happen.
As of December 2024, Star Citizen has raised over $750 million through funding. The game has also successfully met every stretch goal set since its initial announcement, including a recent $65 million goal that will allow the developers to improve ship customization options.
In August, Chris Roberts discussed when we might see both Star Citizen and its single-player campaign, Squadron 42, released. He stated the studio is targeting a 2026 launch for Squadron 42, but Star Citizen will require more development time, with a planned release in either 2027 or 2028.
