The movie seemed promising even from the start, but fans were especially surprised by the inclusion of Yoshi and Bowser Jr. However, there were even more unexpected additions, like Fox McCloud from Star Fox, hinting at a much bigger world the film is building towards.
As a lifelong cinema devotee, I’m thrilled to see another Nintendo character join the world of Mario! But what really strikes me is that Fox’s arrival feels like Nintendo is laying the groundwork for something huge – their own version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, really. Now, it’s not a matter of if we’ll see a massive crossover event with Super Smash Bros., but when it’ll happen!
Star Fox Perfectly Captures the Growth of Nintendo’s Cinematic Plans
In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, when Princess Peach talks about many galaxies, it’s a reference to games like Super Mario Galaxy. But it also hints at the idea of a multiverse—other worlds that could connect to Mario’s. Knowing this, it wasn’t surprising to see a character from one of those other worlds appear.
Bringing the world of Star Fox together with Mario feels like a great fit. It’s a believable connection that doesn’t feel forced, especially since Mario is already venturing into space, making the cosmic setting feel natural.
As a fan, I don’t think bringing Fox McCloud into the story would be too confusing for most people. He could make a cameo without needing a huge backstory explanation. Sure, it’s a bit of a surprise to see him, but it’s not so jarring that it would pull viewers out of the experience. Unlike some characters, you don’t need to know a ton of details about his world to understand why he’s involved in a space adventure.
The space theme cleverly explained R.O.B.’s appearance as a robot in the movie – a pretty unusual touch! And if the Mario films are following the same formula as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then Fox is like the Thor of the series: just different enough to get fans excited without being too confusing.
Miyamoto’s Four Creations Mirror the MCU’s Roadmap
But more than that, he’s also set up the notion that this could all be happening for one reason.
In addition to classics like Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and Star Fox, Shigeru Miyamoto is also the creator of Kirby, The Legend of Zelda, and Pikmin. However, the film’s emphasis on Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, and Fox – with the last two confirmed to appear – suggests it’s playing it safe with familiar characters, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In its early phases, the Marvel Cinematic Universe took creative risks with its style and storytelling, but generally stuck to familiar territory. Focusing on individual films for Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America before The Avengers allowed audiences to really connect with each character. Nintendo seems to be taking a similar approach with its developing movie universe, which could lead to the same strong connection with fans.
Audiences are already familiar with the worlds of Mario and Donkey Kong. Adding characters like Pikmin and, especially, Fox, expands the story’s possibilities without straying too far from what people love. Though Fox is a space traveler, he shares a strong connection with the creator, Miyamoto, just like the other characters, and embodies the spirit of Mario’s universe. He’s similar to Thor in terms of his setting and overall feel, which allows the story to grow and build a larger universe without drastically changing established lore, especially with the possibility of a Smash Bros. movie on the horizon.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is Promising Big Things
The Marvel Cinematic Universe builds hype around specific, large-scale events, but Nintendo has a different opportunity. They can simply excite fans about anything new they release. It’s true there isn’t a lot of established groundwork for a huge, connected universe yet, but it’s enough to spark people’s imaginations and get them thinking about what’s next.
During the recent Nintendo Direct, Miyamoto mentioned bringing back some beloved characters from the past. With R.O.B. and Pikmin already confirmed to be in the game, it’s likely we’ll see other favorites like Kirby and Captain Falcon make an appearance too.
As a lifelong Nintendo fan, it’s been amazing to see how they’re building out this shared universe. I noticed something really cool in The Super Mario Bros. Movie – the pizzeria Mario and Luigi visit had a picture of Little Mac and his trainer from Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! on the wall! It shows they’re not just focusing on Mario, but celebrating all of Nintendo. And honestly, it feels like they’re laying the groundwork for something huge without even needing a massive event to kick it off. Because of all this, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they announced a Super Smash Bros. movie – and I think it could be just as big a phenomenon as The Avengers!
As a critic, I remember the build-up to The Avengers was masterful – years of individual movies and a huge marketing push created genuine excitement. Adapting Super Smash Bros. to the big screen feels trickier, though. It’s not a natural narrative like assembling a team of heroes. However, what Smash Bros. does have going for it is that incredible fan appeal – the sheer joy of seeing all these iconic characters from different worlds finally meet and interact. That’s a powerful hook, if they can pull it off.
