Fans are eagerly awaiting the new series Lanterns, which will bring the Green Lantern universe back to television. Interestingly, another Green Lantern project was previously planned for HBO Max. Now, an actor who was cast in that earlier series has spoken about their role and whether they would be interested in joining the new DC Universe being developed.
Jeremy Irvine was originally cast as Alan Scott in a Green Lantern project that was later cancelled. While speaking with ComicBook about his new film, Return to Silent Hill, Irvine shared his experience working with Greg Berlanti on the abandoned Green Lantern series. He expressed his admiration for Berlanti and praised the scripts, calling them excellent and highlighting the talented team involved. Irvine said he was really enthusiastic about the project.
It’s common for projects to get announced and then fall through – that’s just part of the industry, though it’s not usually made public. I expect to commit to around twenty projects next year that ultimately won’t get made. This particular project was one I was really excited about. And if they ask me to work with them again, I’d be happy to.
What Happened To The Canceled Green Lanterns Show

The previously planned Green Lantern series for HBO Max was quite different from the new one. It was being developed by Berlanti and written by Seth Grahame-Smith, who had completed the scripts for all eight episodes of the first season. The series had already begun casting, with Finn Whitrock set to play Guy Gardner and Irvine as Alan Scott.
The project was progressing well until October 2022, when plans changed and the show underwent a complete overhaul. As a result, Grahame-Smith, who had already completed most of a season, left the project. Whitlock and Irvine also departed, as their contracts were tied to the original plan.
This change happened at the same time James Gunn and Peter Safran began leading DC Studios, leading to significant adjustments. The planned Green Lantern series was reimagined as Lanterns, shifting the focus from the traditional Green Lantern Corps to a detective-style story set on Earth, starring John Stewart and Hal Jordan. As part of this overhaul, most of the projects from the previous era were abandoned, though a few elements were kept, including the Peacemaker series, Jason Momoa (now playing Lobo), and the Blue Beetle character, who is expected to reappear in future DCU projects.
It’s a shame we didn’t get to see where the last Green Lantern series was going, but hopefully those scripts will surface someday. Luckily, we have a new Green Lantern series to anticipate!
Return to Silent Hill hits theaters on January 23, 2026. Lanterns hits HBO Max later this year.
