Star Trek: Alex Kurtzman On Franchise’s Future Beyond 2027

I’m so excited for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to finally arrive on Paramount+ on January 15th! Alex Kurtzman, one of the big creative minds behind the whole Star Trek universe on the streaming service, is finally talking about what’s next. He’s not only an executive producer on Starfleet Academy – working alongside Noga Landau – but he also directed a bunch of episodes, so he’s really involved in bringing this new series to life.

Before the New York City premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Alex Kurtzman spoke with The Ankler (as reported by TrekMovie) about the future of Star Trek television following the sale of Paramount Global to Skydance Media. Kurtzman indicated that they are developing more Star Trek shows for release after 2027. He confirmed that Starfleet Academy won’t be the last Star Trek series he launches.

Okay, so things are shifting over at Paramount. I’m hearing Alex Kurtzman is planning to connect with David Ellison, the new CEO of Paramount Skydance, as soon as he wraps up directing the season finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. But good news, he’s already met with Jane Wiseman, the new head of Paramount+ Originals, and Chris Parnell, an EVP there – they both came to the New York premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, so they had a chance to chat!

Look, we’ve been discussing the future, but honestly, we need to get into the nitty-gritty details – especially when it comes to timing and how everything will fit together. I’ve spent a lot of one-on-one time with everyone involved, and we’re planning a larger meeting once we finish up with Starfleet season two to really hash things out. I’m strictly focused on the series side, so I’m not privy to what the feature film team is planning. But, fingers crossed, we’ll all be able to connect and make sure everything aligns before moving forward.

Making Trek has been an incredible experience, far exceeding my expectations. If everyone is interested in continuing, that would be great, and we’ll take it from there.

Alex Kurtzman mentioned that Chris Parnell is a big fan of both Star Trek and science fiction in general. Parnell previously worked on Apple TV+’s For All Mankind, a show executive produced by Star Trek veteran Ronald D. Moore. Kurtzman shared that Parnell was very supportive after seeing the pilot for Starfleet Academy.

I shared the pilot episode of Starfleet Academy with him, which was nerve-wracking because he’s a huge Star Trek fan. About fifteen minutes in, he exclaimed, “Yes!” After that, I was completely open to any feedback he had. He’s been incredibly supportive and eager to discuss the project further, and I haven’t gotten any sense that he’s unhappy with it, so I’m feeling optimistic.

Since 2017, Alex Kurtzman and his production company, Secret Hideout, have overseen all Star Trek content on Paramount+, starting with Star Trek: Discovery. His contract was extended for another five years in 2021. During this time, they launched six Star Trek series and the first Star Trek movie designed for streaming, Star Trek: Section 31.

Following Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount Global, Paramount+ has approved the remaining two seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which just finished filming. They’ve also ordered two seasons of a new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Both shows are expected to launch new seasons in 2026 and 2027, as Paramount+ determines the long-term plan for Star Trek.

Fans are eager to learn what Paramount Skydance has planned for the future of Star Trek on both television and in film. While we wait for details, it’s good to hear that Alex Kurtzman is interested in continuing his work with the franchise. His contributions on Paramount+ have broadened the scope of Star Trek, exploring different types of stories and bringing back many fan-favorite characters.

Alex Kurtzman clarified he isn’t involved with the Star Trek movies. Paramount Skydance canceled the planned Star Trek 4 starring Chris Pine and is now developing a completely new Star Trek film with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. They’ve also stated they want to create a unified Star Trek universe, bridging the gap between the TV shows and films.

Alex Kurtzman is developing the next chapter of Star Trek with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The series features a fresh, young cast, including Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter, and Kurtzman aims to draw in new fans to ensure the future of Star Trek for many years.
