In the recently aired episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, two classic figures from the series made a casual return. Excitingly, the creators of the show have verified that a longstanding fan hypothesis has officially become part of the franchise’s history!
In the recent episode, “Wedding Bell Blues,” I found myself captivated by Rhys Darby’s portrayal of a character who bore an uncanny resemblance to the mischievous Trelane, a role previously brought to life by the late William Campbell. Interestingly, at the end, we heard a voice that was reminiscent of Q, a role John de Lancie is renowned for.
In a recent clarification, those in charge of Strange New Worlds have made it crystal clear that the finale’s conclusion indeed establishes Q as Trelane’s father.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: “Akiva Goldsman, the showrunner, confirmed a clever fan theory that we’ve gratefully adopted as official lore.
Henry Alonso Myers, co-showrunner, made a slight clarification, stating: “All we can confirm is that the parents are human. We’re using our human perspective to interpret their cultures, regardless of what they might be.

Darby mentioned that hearing De Lancie give voice to his father provided a hint at just how significant this character must be, as he puts it. He found it truly an honor to be a part of this addition to the Star Trek lore, knowing that fans will undoubtedly be thrilled about it all.
In the recent episode of Strange New Worlds season 3, Trelane, who debuted in the 1967 episode The Squire of Gothos, once again played tricks with reality by convincing everyone except Roger Korby (Cillian O’Sullivan) that Spock (Ethan Peck) and Christine (Jess Bush) were getting married.
In the end, Trelane is convinced to halt the game – but soon faces his father, Q, who scolds him sternly, much like a disobedient child.
Eight more episodes remain in the third season of Strange New Worlds, and the critically acclaimed series is slated to continue for another two seasons. However, the final season will be shortened to just five episodes.
That leaves plenty of time for more franchise-changing revelations – so watch this space!
