Believe it or not, Star Trek will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026! Luckily, fans won’t have to wait long for new content to commemorate the milestone. The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is set to launch on Paramount+ in January with a special two-part premiere. Then, just a month later, a new Star Trek film will be released. While this isn’t a full-length movie – that’s still in very early planning stages after the Paramount/Skydance merger – it’s a great way to celebrate the franchise’s lasting appeal.
Tribeca Films has picked up the documentary Beam Me Up, Sulu, and it will be available to stream online starting February 17, 2026. The film centers around actor George Takei, known for his role as Sulu in Star Trek, and features a rediscovered student film he made in 1985. More broadly, the documentary examines how Star Trek was ahead of its time in promoting diversity and representation in television and popular culture.
Beam Me Up, Sulu Is the Perfect Way to Celebrate Star Trek’s Milestone Anniversary

I’m a little disappointed we won’t be getting a brand new Star Trek movie for the 60th anniversary – it would have been amazing to see something like Star Trek Beyond released again, just like they did for the 50th! But honestly, Beam Me Up, Sulu feels like the perfect way to mark this incredible milestone. Star Trek: The Original Series was so ahead of its time, imagining a future where everyone worked together, no matter their background. The show’s diverse cast was a huge part of what made it special, and it just feels right that Beam Me Up, Sulu is coming out soon to celebrate that legacy.
George Takei described how the documentary is much more than just a look back at the student film he made years ago. He emphasized that it’s about the vital importance of diversity and inclusion – values that Star Trek championed on television and has consistently upheld for almost six decades. While seeing the original student film will be enjoyable, Beam Me Up, Sulu promises to be a moving exploration of Star Trek‘s lasting legacy and the profound effect it’s had on fans across generations.
With the recent releases of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Beam Me Up, Sulu, 2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for Star Trek fans. We’ll also see Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is nearing the end of its run. Hopefully, we’ll get some news about the next Star Trek movie too. Paramount has tapped John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the directors of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, to helm the film, and it would be fantastic to see that project move forward in 2026.
Since its beginning, Star Trek has changed a lot, but it’s always stayed true to its central ideas – and that’s why people still love it. As the franchise enters a new chapter following the Paramount/Skydance merger, the book Beam Me Up, Sulu is a great example of what makes Star Trek special, and hopefully, those qualities will be evident in future movies and shows.
