Star Trek IV Deleted Scene: Admiral Kirk Asks Saavik About Spock’s Baby

Robin Curtis is revisiting a previously unseen scene from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. This film, directed by Leonard Nimoy, is fondly remembered as “the one with the whales.” Released in 1986, it was the most successful Star Trek movie financially until J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot.

As a big Star Trek fan, I always felt bad about what happened with Saavik. Robin Curtis took over the role from Kirstie Alley in The Search for Spock, and she was back for Star Trek IV, but sadly, Saavik didn’t get much to do. She was only really in the beginning of the movie, and then the crew left her behind on Vulcan when they went back to Earth. It was a shame, because I really liked Robin Curtis in the part!

A significant scene cut from the final version of Star Trek IV involved Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) questioning Saavik about whether she was pregnant with Captain Spock’s (Leonard Nimoy) child. Actress Robin Curtis recently performed this deleted scene—with John Champion playing Kirk—on The Trek Files, a podcast hosted by Larry Nemecek. You can watch the recreation here.

Details were removed from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home about Lieutenant Saavik becoming pregnant after a brief romantic encounter with a young Spock on the Genesis Planet in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. This scene, which involved Saavik and Kirk, was filmed but ultimately didn’t make it into the final cut of Star Trek IV.

Leonard Nimoy, the director, apparently didn’t like the idea of Saavik being Spock’s child. Because this storyline was left out of Star Trek IV, it never became official canon. It wasn’t explored in any subsequent Star Trek films, nor in Nimoy’s later roles as Spock in Star Trek: The Next Generation or the Star Trek movies directed by J.J. Abrams.

In 2024, Roddenberry Archives and OTOY released Unification, a story that brings Captain Kirk and Spock together again. Directed by Carlos Baena, the film featured Robin Curtis reprising her role as Saavik, and introduced Mark Chinnery as her adult son, Sorak, who is also Spock’s son. While not considered official Star Trek storyline, Unification provides a satisfying and emotional conclusion for Kirk, Spock, and fans of the series.

Saavik last officially appeared in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. However, Star Trek: Picard season 3 honored her by naming a shuttlecraft after her, and related stories revealed she later became Captain of the USS Titan. The Trek Files also shares a touching scene between Saavik and Kirk, adding more depth to her character and background.
