The new comic series, Star Trek: The Last Starship, has quickly become a captivating and surprising addition to the Star Trek universe. In just three issues, the series from IDW presents a dramatically different future where the Federation is falling apart, with only a handful of ships and captains remaining. The biggest surprise came right away – the return of Captain James T. Kirk! And the latest issue, released this week, concludes the first part of the story with another unexpected development.
In the third issue of Star Trek: The Last Starship, Captain Sato and the crew of the USS Omega faced a fierce Klingon attack, resulting in a brutal battle. Though the Omega won, the victory came at a great price. Following another attack, Earth decided to leave the Federation and declare its independence. Beyond these dramatic events, a surprising romance emerged, potentially becoming one of the most unexpected in Star Trek history.
Captain Kirk and Agnes the Borg Queen Share a Surprising Kiss

We previously learned that Agnes Jurati, the Borg leader, had recreated James Kirk using technology, but her motives remained a mystery. After the attack on Earth, Kirk confronts Agnes, demanding to know why he was brought back. She shockingly reveals she’s not seeking his pain, but hoping for a miracle, and then kisses him.
Many questions remain, particularly surrounding the return of Captain Kirk. The way he’s been brought back feels less like a true resurrection and more like cloning, which is unsettling. We also don’t fully understand Agnes’s goals. While she claims to be acting to save the Federation, her kiss with Kirk hints at a more personal connection. Was bringing Kirk back solely about giving the Federation a chance, or is there something deeper going on? It seems we’ll get more answers soon. According to co-writer Jackson Lanzing, the meaning of a key moment in issue #3 will become clearer later on, and may change how we currently interpret it.
Honestly, I’m really worried about Captain Kirk. No matter what Agnes is up to, it’s clear he’s going to need a huge stroke of luck to fix everything with the Federation and the galaxy. And things aren’t going to get any easier, that’s for sure. It feels like we’re heading for a really complicated situation.
Star Trek: The Last Starship #3 is on sale now.
