Every Starfleet captain faces setbacks, and Star Trek often shows these moments of defeat. No matter how skilled a captain is, they will inevitably encounter a problem they can’t solve. These defeats can be significant, deeply affecting the characters, like when Captain Jean-Luc Picard was turned into Locutus and led an attack on the Federation.
The most impactful losses aren’t just about military setbacks; they happen when opponents outsmart Starfleet’s top officers. Gul Dukat consistently challenged Captain Sisko, leading to intense strategic clashes where Dukat sometimes won. However, some defeats are just humiliating, and recently, Starfleet Academy has made the same mistake Captain Kirk once did.
How Does a Starfleet Captain Lose Control of His Starship?

The incident occurred in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. In the film, Spock’s half-brother, Sybok, managed to take over the Enterprise through a complex scheme. He used hostages to lure a starship, then used his powerful Vulcan mind-meld ability to control others, claiming he was trying to heal emotional wounds. However, this process ultimately made people loyal to him instead of Captain Kirk.
This is definitely one of the strangest episodes in Star Trek history, and even experienced officers on the Enterprise were drawn to the idea of getting rid of their emotional pain. Very few had the insight to immediately distrust Sybok like Captain Kirk did. Kirk realized his hardships had shaped him into the person he was, and he chose to accept that pain instead of trying to escape it. It also didn’t help that this version of the Enterprise was quickly put into service, likely making it easier to take over, and potentially meaning some security measures weren’t yet in place.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Just Shared Kirk’s Defeat

In the late 33rd century, Captain Ake of the USS Athena – a starship used as a base at Starfleet Academy – faces a devastating loss, with her ship falling into enemy hands. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, best known as Commander Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation, the episode “300th Night” reveals Nus Braka’s elaborate plan. He’s obtained a powerful weapon – an Omega particle – and uses it to trap the Federation, threatening to destroy warp travel if they try to escape. It’s a dangerous situation reminiscent of the galactic disaster known as the Burn, but this time, Braka has intentionally created it as a weapon.
The USS Athena is positioned outside the barrier with only a minimal crew. Captain Ake has taken the ship on a secret mission, though Admiral Vance seems to have quietly allowed it. Unfortunately, the Athena is soon chased by Venari Ral ships, which force it out of warp and capture it with tractor beams. Ake cleverly orders the ship to separate its saucer section and utilize its secondary warp engines. This allows the saucer to escape into a nebula while the main part of the Athena is left behind.
Ake’s loss feels slightly less devastating than Kirk’s. While she does lose command of her ship and is determined to reclaim it, her crew didn’t betray her – she simply doesn’t have many crew members left, relying mostly on cadets from Starfleet Academy. In contrast, Braka didn’t originally plan to capture the Athena; the ship was a fortunate surprise. However, losing a ship to the enemy is undoubtedly a humiliating experience for any captain.
Ake’s loss is more worrying than Kirk’s, because the enemy didn’t anticipate it. Sybok had a clear goal for the Enterprise – to find the answer to why a god would need a starship. But Braka is a clever strategist who already tricked the entire Federation. Now that he has a brand-new, technologically advanced Federation starship, he’ll likely find many ways to use it to his advantage. Captain Ake urgently needs to reclaim her ship before Braka can exploit its capabilities.
