Star Trek: Legacy Would Bring Back a Beloved Dead Character in a Surprising Way

This weekend, at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention, we received updates about a cancelled spinoff series titled Star Trek: Legacy, which was previously in development but not likely to air anytime soon. Originally created for Paramount+ by showrunner Terry Matalas, this series would have served as a continuation from Star Trek: Picard. Despite its current shelved status, Matalas shared insights about the project and made it clear that there are no immediate plans to bring it back. One intriguing detail he revealed was his plans for reintroducing Captain Liam Shaw (portrayed by Todd Stashwick) into the narrative.

Fans speculated that Shaw could be resurrected using Borg technology, a theory that gained traction. The conversation delved quite deeply before Matalas finally revealed his true intentions for Shaw’s character. He admitted, as reported by TrekMovie.com, that Shaw wouldn’t return to life with Borg nanites. Instead, he was intended to be the Engineering Hologram who didn’t want to shut down and was furious about the Titan being transformed into the Enterprise. He would refuse to refer to it as the Enterprise, except in late instances.

The groundbreaking idea resonated deeply with everyone present, even Stashwick who quipped, “We’ve nicknamed it the ‘Shawlogram’.” Yet, it’s essential to maintain cautious optimism as this project may not be realized. Although Paramount’s merger with Skydance and their commitment to boost original content has sparked anticipation for some delayed projects to resume, Matalas clarified that Legacy is not among them.

He commented, “Remember, it’s always best not to rule things out completely.” Remarkably, he chose not to disclose certain concepts regarding his potential future projects, keeping them under wraps should the project eventually take off. In the interim, though, his schedule is brimming as he assumes the role of showrunner for Vision Quest, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige sought him out precisely due to his exceptional work on Star Trek: Picard Season 3.

Matalas has confirmed that the series “Vision Quest” is currently in post-production, which is great for its schedule. However, it requires substantial special effects to revive Marvel’s robots before its expected 2026 release. In the interim, Matalas mentioned that his contract doesn’t prevent him from rejoining the “Star Trek” series, stating casually, “I can work on anything.

As a dedicated follower, I’m excited to share that Star Trek: Picard is currently streaming on Paramount+, and the rest of the franchise titles can be found there as well. While the dream project, Legacy, remains shelved for now, we enthusiastic fans keep our fingers crossed, eagerly awaiting any significant shifts at Paramount that could pave the way for its realization soon.
