Star Trek Officially Reveals a New Enterprise (But It’s Not What You Think)

The USS Enterprise is instantly recognizable as the starship at the heart of Star Trek, representing a spirit of discovery. Throughout Starfleet history, many legendary captains have commanded Enterprises, including Archer, Pike, Kirk, and Picard. Usually, the Enterprise is the Federation’s leading ship – its most technologically advanced – crewed by the very best personnel. However, the recent Star Trek: Lower Decks #18 comic book, from IDW, written by Tim Sheridan and illustrated by Vernon Smith, presents a surprising new take on the iconic vessel.

This isn’t the Starfleet vessel, the USS Enterprise. Captain Freeman immediately recognizes it as a ship belonging to the Ferengi. The Ferengi likely chose the name with a different meaning in mind – “enterprise” can also refer to a business or company. They probably meant it as a sly joke at the Federation’s expense, knowing the similar names would cause confusion.

The Ferengi Enterprise’s Captain is No Kirk or Picard

The Ferengi ship’s captain, Quog, isn’t a brilliant strategist like Kirk or Picard. He used to be a janitor, but helped the crew of the USS Cerritos on a previous mission and was promoted as a thank you. Interestingly, in Lower Decks episode #18, Quog’s crew teams up with the Federation for a slightly misguided task. Ultimately, it’s Quog’s ship that survives, not Captain Worf’s.

The Ferengi ship, disguised as the Enterprise, is bound to create chaos throughout the galaxy. The Ferengi likely anticipated this, intending to exploit the Enterprise’s reputation for their own gain – the name would probably scare off enemies and convince others to do business with them. The Federation really should have trademarked the name ‘Enterprise’ to prevent this kind of deception.

We can be sure that whatever the Ferengi do, it won’t tarnish the reputation of the Enterprise. The Enterprise still exists in the 32nd century, as seen in the shows Discovery and Starfleet Academy (along with other famous ships like the Voyager). So, it’s likely the Ferengi version will be a small, unimportant detail in galactic history, if anyone even remembers it. Quog might be powerful, but he’s almost certainly going to be forgotten.
