On a Wednesday, the preview for the movie titled “XENO” was released online, providing viewers with a captivating blend of the films “Alien” and “E.T.“. The production is the brainchild of Matthew Loren Oates, who both wrote and directed it, while Kevin Hart served as producer. In the lead role, we have Lulu Wilson, a 19-year-old actress with an extensive resume dating back to her youth. One of her notable roles includes a single episode on “Star Trek: Picard“. With such a promising start, it’s clear that she is ready for more leading roles. The release date for “XENO” in the U.S. is set for September 19th.
Xeno offers the thrilling terror and gruesome aspects typical of a monster movie combined with the warmth and excitement found in a kids’ adventure film. The trailer is filled with grand, sweeping music, and the story presented suggests strong similarities to E.T., as Wilson’s character Renee first encounters an alien that has crash-landed, forming a bond instead of feeling fear. She goes on to secretly protect this alien from those who seek to capture it.
The distinction is clear: This alien isn’t a small biped capable of understanding English; it’s a massive, powerful being with claws, armor, and speed that can outrun an ATV. Additionally, it possesses supernatural abilities, as demonstrated by its capacity to levitate Renee during their initial encounter.
In Star Trek: Picard Season 1, Episode 7, “Nepenthe,” actress Wilson portrayed Kestra. However, she is most recognized for her role as the lead character in the thriller Becky, which was also released in that year. She returned to the Becky universe in 2023’s The Wrath of Becky, where she played a resourceful teenage girl who manages to outsmart and overpower a gang of escaped convicts trying to raid her family home. Notably, Wilson has starred in numerous horror and thriller productions. For instance, she portrayed the younger version of Shirley in The Haunting of Hill House, and Marian Crellin in Sharp Objects.
XENO, it’s worth mentioning, marks Oates’ initial credit on IMDb across any role. Hart was instrumental in producing the film through his company Hartbeat, which facilitated a collaboration with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to ensure the alien appeared authentic. The cast also features Wrenn Schmidt, Paul Schneider, and Omari Hardwick.
XENO will be distributed by Blue Fox Entertainment, and will hit theaters on September 19th.
