The future of Star Trek is looking bright, but it’s hard to predict what’s happening beyond the next year or two. We know a new movie is in the works from Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Starfleet Academy will debut in January, and the final two seasons of Strange New Worlds are planned, likely starting in Spring 2026. However, the recent change in ownership at Paramount means long-term plans are uncertain. Will the potential Picard continuation, Star Trek: Legacy, ever be produced? What about a sequel to Enterprise called Star Trek: United? And will we see the proposed Strange New Worlds spin-off, Year One? Even the cast is wondering about these possibilities.

Christina Chong, who plays La’an on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, recently spoke with fans at the Trek To Chicago convention about what the future might hold. TrekMovie originally reported on the potential for a show called Year One, and Chong addressed that possibility, along with the unconfirmed spin-off centered around Kirk. According to her, the cast doesn’t seem to know any more about upcoming plans than the fans do.

I’m not sure what the future holds for the show. We haven’t even confirmed if there will be a continuation, and even if there is, it won’t include the whole original cast. It’s going to be a very different series – not another season of Strange New Worlds, but something entirely new.

Christina Chong Reflects On The Bittersweet Ending of Strange New Worlds

Chong shared her feelings about filming the last season of Strange New Worlds. Currently being filmed in Toronto, the production team hopes to finish before Christmas. She admitted to TrekMovie that she’s finding it difficult to accept the show is ending.

It’s a really emotional experience, a mix of sadness and gratitude. It’s hitting me that this is the last time we’ll all be together on set, the last time I’ll wear this uniform, and the last time I’ll share a scene with Spock. It’s all those ‘last times’ that are getting to me. It feels surreal, even though my final costume fitting is tomorrow, knowing it’s all coming to an end.

It’s still uncertain if the finale of Strange New Worlds truly concludes the story. Discussions about a Year One spin-off suggest it could connect SNW to The Original Series, and despite recent changes at Paramount, it seems unlikely they’d abandon a project with so much positive support. Paramount has stated that Star Trek is a priority, especially reviving the film franchise. This doesn’t rule out continuing projects that were already in development – as we’ve seen with the transition from the DCEU to DCU. However, for now, we’ll simply have to wait for more information.

Akiva Goldsman, an executive producer on Strange New Worlds, has said that ‘Year One’ is their goal – a way to extend the show’s storytelling. He’s also discussed what the future of the series might look like, especially regarding pitches he’s made to Paramount.

Strange New Worlds concludes with Jim Kirk beginning his journey as captain of the Enterprise. If you consider ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’ a second pilot episode, it leaves a lot of unexplored potential – untold stories about the ship, the crew, and their relationships. We’d love to focus a new show on that period, filling in the gaps between what we’ve already seen, rather than directly continuing existing storylines.
