As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I wasn’t surprised to see some chatter – or, let’s be honest, a bit of a debate – about the new show, Starfleet Academy. It seems like any time a new Trek series comes out, people get especially passionate about the Klingons! There’s just so much history and a whole culture built around them, so it’s always tough for a new show to put its own spin on those characters without upsetting anyone. This new series is already facing that challenge, it seems.
New trailers for Starfleet Academy have revealed a new character, Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon cadet played by Karim Diané. Unlike typical Klingons in Star Trek, who are usually portrayed as angry warriors or stern Starfleet officers, Jay-Den Kraag appears to be a very different kind of character.
This Klingon character isn’t just seeking acceptance into Starfleet—he aspires to be a doctor. This surprising display of kindness and compassion, along with video of him actually smiling, has shocked some Star Trek fans who fear it changes the core of the series. But Karim Diané sees things differently.
Klingons Are Healers Too (Not Just Killers)

The actor playing the newest Klingon in Star Trek recently spoke with SFX Magazine about the role and how fans have reacted. When asked if his character, Jay-Den Kraag, was a unique addition to Star Trek, Karim Diané pointed out something many fans might not realize: Klingon society isn’t just about warriors. He explained that while this might be the first time a Klingon healer has been shown on screen, healers have always been a part of Klingon culture, just like in any community.
Diané’s idea is spot-on: if Klingons are known for fighting, they logically need ways to heal injuries. After all, those who mend wounds understand anatomy and vulnerabilities intimately. A Klingon healer wouldn’t just fix injuries – that same knowledge could easily be used to inflict them if needed. We’d love to see an episode of Starfleet Academy explore this with the character Kraag!
Over time, Star Trek has consistently deepened the portrayal of Klingons, starting with Michael Dorn’s character, Worf, in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Dorn brilliantly demonstrated the inner struggles of a Klingon, proving the character is capable of great depth. While the visual design of Klingons is open to discussion, a Klingon who shows compassion, values friendship, and even smiles shouldn’t be surprising or controversial.
Starting January 15th, you can watch Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+. And for all things Star Trek, be sure to join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
