Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the newest addition to the Star Trek franchise and takes place furthest into the future. The show centers around a group of students training to become Starfleet officers, including Jay-Den Kraag (played by Karim Diané), a Klingon cadet who wants to become a doctor.
Last week, Paramount announced the show’s cancellation. While a second season was already filmed and will be released on Paramount+ around 2027, there won’t be any further seasons after that.
Karim Diané announced on Instagram that Season 2 will be the final season of the show. He expressed how difficult it was to share the news, explaining how much he loves the series. He was grateful for the opportunity to work on 20 episodes within such a well-known science fiction franchise, alongside incredibly talented people. With 10 episodes remaining, he described Season 2 as an enhanced version of Season 1 and promised to continue sharing behind-the-scenes content. He thanked fans for their support of him, the character Jay-Den, and the show itself.
Paramount didn’t cancel Starfleet Academy for one single reason, but a major factor was likely its high production costs and consistently low viewership. While critics generally liked the show – it had an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes – the cancellation was met with mixed reactions from fans, with some even celebrating it (including author Andy Weir of Project Hail Mary). Many fans felt the show was too geared towards young adults, lacked exciting action, and was overly focused on social issues. Specifically, some objected to the show’s diversity and representation, such as the inclusion of gay characters like Jay-Den.
That provides context for the comment Karim Diané left on his Instagram post:
Season 2 is incredibly gay, and I have tons of behind-the-scenes content on the way! Get ready, because I’m going to be talking a lot about this amazing gay character – you might get tired of hearing about it! We’re about to go wild with excitement! 🔥 🔥 🔥
The claim that Star Trek is now “too woke” feels strange, considering the show has always tackled social issues. A prime example is the famous interracial kiss between Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Uhura in the original series, which caused controversy when it aired on NBC in 1968.
Season two of Starfleet Academy seems to be continuing the current storyline, but we’ll have to wait for more details. Before that, the fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – which has a more traditional, episode-by-episode format reminiscent of classic Star Trek – is scheduled to be released this year, followed by a fifth and final season. After that, there might not be any new Star Trek series for a while, unless Paramount+ has something else in development.
