Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Canceled by Paramount+ After Two Seasons

The streaming series, which has sparked a lot of debate among fans, will conclude after its second season on Paramount+.

The cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a worrying sign for the future of Star Trek. It’s been ten years since Star Trek: Discovery launched the franchise into the world of streaming, and now, for the first time since then, there are no new Star Trek TV shows currently being made.

The Writing Was on the Wall for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Though disappointing for fans of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the show’s cancellation isn’t unexpected. It proved divisive among Star Trek fans and struggled to attract a wider audience, as evidenced by its poor performance on streaming charts. Initially, it briefly appeared on Paramount+’s top 10 list, but quickly disappeared. More telling were the indicators that the show wasn’t gaining traction.

The show was renewed for a second season before the first season even finished broadcasting, which initially seemed promising. However, after a change in ownership at Paramount Skydance and a shift in the company’s overall strategy, it’s understandable why a show with low viewership was cancelled.

It’s the End of an Era for Star Trek

Over the last ten years, Star Trek has experienced a major resurgence on Paramount+. Star Trek: Discovery marked the first new Star Trek TV show in over a decade, and it was quickly followed by Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Picard, a continuation of The Next Generation. This period also saw Star Trek experiment with different types of shows, including the adult animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks, the children’s adventure series Star Trek: Prodigy, the streaming movie Star Trek: Section 31, and the short-form anthology Star Trek: Short Treks. A teen drama set at Starfleet Academy, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is also in development.
