The show is currently a top performer on Paramount+ after its latest episode reimagined a well-known alien species for the year 3200. According to Flix Patrol, the fourth episode, titled “Vox in Excelso,” released on Thursday, propelled the series into the top 10 streaming shows on the platform.
The show is currently ranking tenth. It usually gets a boost in popularity when a new episode comes out, but views drop off considerably before the next one, which isn’t ideal for a high-profile series from a major streaming platform.
The fourth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy stood out because it showed what happened to the Klingons in the 32nd century. The Klingon Empire no longer exists; their home planet, Qo’noS, was destroyed, and the Klingons are now refugees scattered across the galaxy. Their numbers are greatly reduced, and their culture has changed significantly over time.
In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, this concept is explored through the setting of a school. The situation with the Klingons becomes the subject of a debate for the academy’s debate club.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Surges on Streaming After Major Klingon Episode
Despite receiving positive reviews from critics – earning an 88% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes – viewers aren’t as enthusiastic about Starfleet Academy, giving it a user score of just 42%.
Despite the recent change in ownership at Paramount and the potential departure of Alex Kurtzman from overseeing the Star Trek franchise, the future of Starfleet Academy remains hopeful. While a second season is currently being filmed, its long-term fate is unclear. However, history shows us that cancellation doesn’t always mean the end for a Star Trek series. Characters from the original TOS returned to the screen years after their show finished, and the TNG crew reunited decades after Picard concluded. Each new storyteller in the Star Trek universe builds upon the work of those who came before, and based on the first six episodes, Starfleet Academy appears poised to establish a strong base for the franchise to continue for many years to come.
The new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows a group of young cadets as they strive to achieve their dream of joining Starfleet. They’ll face challenges from demanding instructors, form friendships and rivalries, experience first loves, and confront a dangerous new enemy that threatens not only the Academy, but the entire Federation.
The cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy features Holly Hunter as the chancellor of Starfleet Academy, alongside new cadets played by Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard. Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, and Robert Picardo also star, with guest appearances by Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman, and recurring roles for Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is streaming on Paramount+. New episodes debut on Thursdays.
