I’ve been waiting for this! Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is finally here on Paramount Plus. It’s been in the works for a while, and I’m so excited to see Holly Hunter (from The Incredibles!) leading the show. It’s a spin-off, so it’s great to see the Star Trek universe expanding.
This Star Trek series is different from most others. Instead of focusing on a starship’s adventures, it’s more like a high school drama, showing us a group of students at Starfleet Academy as they train to become future starship captains.
While some longtime fans have been hesitant, critics generally like the series. Metacritic, a website that collects reviews, gives it a “generally favourable” rating, including our own review.
As a big sci-fi and fantasy fan, I really appreciated the performances in this show, especially from Hunter and Paul Giamatti. Giamatti was fantastic as the villain – a Klingon who’s basically the enemy of Hunter’s character, who goes from being a captain to a teacher. It was a great dynamic!
She felt the show was overly sentimental for some viewers and that several characters haven’t been fully developed yet. However, she noted that by episode six – the last one critics saw – the plot was finally becoming more exciting.
Paul Giamatti, a two-time Oscar nominee, recently shared with TopMob that he’s a longtime Star Trek fan and doesn’t look down on the science fiction series at all.
I’m known for more intimate, funny dramas lately, but I actually began my career with big studio comedies and action films. Because of that, I don’t really think about entertainment being ‘high’ or ‘low’ quality. Even something like Star Trek has a lot of intelligence and creativity – it doesn’t feel like a step down for me at all.
