The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has finished airing, and there’s already exciting news for fans: the show has been renewed for a second season! The announcement was made at New York Comic Con in 2024.
Now that Tatiana Maslany has returned as Anisha Mir in the season finale, viewers can anticipate a more troubled Caleb as he begins his second year at Starfleet Academy.
Originally, creator Alex Kurtzman envisioned the series as a four-year journey mirroring a college experience. Following the cadets’ first year, they’ll now encounter more difficult challenges and new enemies aboard the USS Athena (NCC-392023).
As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m eagerly awaiting news on whether Paramount+ will renew Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for a third season. Here’s a rundown of everything we know about season 2 so far.
Starfleet Academy season 2 release date speculation
We don’t have a release date for the second season of Starfleet Academy yet, but filming has finished! The season was shot at Pinewood Studios in Toronto, and the actors shared some heartfelt messages and videos on Instagram to celebrate.
Paramount+ hasn’t announced when the new seasons of Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds will be available yet. But, based on how the streaming service has released shows in the Star Trek universe before, Starfleet Academy season 2 is probably aiming for a release in early 2027.
Based on past patterns, the fourth season of Strange New Worlds will likely premiere between mid- and late-2026. Paramount+ usually spaces out its Star Trek shows, releasing one series from January to March and another in the summer or fall, to avoid having two live-action shows airing at the same time.

Who could star in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2?
Details about the plot are still mostly secret, but we know the show’s creator, Alex Kurtzman, designed it to feel like following students through four years of college. This means season two will cover the cadets’ second year at Starfleet, and we can anticipate seeing the same main characters return.
An Instagram video posted by actor Karim Diané (who plays Jay-Den Kraag) revealed that Tig Notaro’s character will have a bigger role in the second season of the show. Fans can expect to see more of her!

Paul Giamatti recently shared on the D-Con Chamber podcast that his villainous character, Braka, won’t be in the show’s second season. However, he expressed interest in coming back for a potential third season if it’s approved.
The cast we’d expect to see return for Starfleet Academy season 2 is as follows:
- Holly Hunter as Captain/Chancellor Nahla Ake
- Sandro Rosta as Caleb Mir
- Karim Diané as Jay-Den Kraag
- Bella Shepard as Genesis Lythe
- Kerrice Brooks as Series Acclimation Mil (Sam)
- Zoë Steiner as Tarima Sadal
- Tig Notaro as Jett Reno
- Robert Picardo as The Doctor
- Gina Yashere as Lura Thok
- Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance
- Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly
- Tatiana Maslany as Anisha Mir
- Becky Lynch as Lieutenant McKenzie Ya
- Stephen Colbert as Starfleet Academy’s Digital Dean
What could Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 be about?
Wow, that season finale left me with so many questions! I’m really hoping they dig deeper into a few things in season two, especially the story of Anisha Mir. I mean, what actually happened after Starfleet arrested her? Her escape was so sudden, and her time hiding is a total mystery. We know Braka helped her get away, but I’m dying to find out what that whole situation was like while Caleb was growing up. It feels like there’s a huge piece of the puzzle missing there!
Caleb’s loyalties are going to be seriously challenged. He’ll likely have to decide where his true allegiance lies – with his biological mother or with the people he considers family at Starfleet Academy.
A key question moving forward is whether the Federation will try to reconnect with the rest of the galaxy, and potentially improve how it’s viewed. Now that the Nus Braka threat is gone, the new season will almost certainly introduce a new major enemy for both the young cadets and the Federation as a whole to confront.

Bella Shepard, who plays Genesis Lythe on the show, recently told TrekMovie.com that a lot has changed for season two, mirroring the growth the cadet characters experienced in the first season. She explained that the cadets have become closer as their relationships have deepened, and the actors themselves have also formed stronger bonds after spending more time together.
Although the show is confirmed for only two seasons right now, the people making it don’t appear to be aiming for a quick or simple conclusion. In an interview with TrekMovie.com, creator and executive producer Gaia Violo hinted at a cliffhanger, saying the ending will be so surprising, viewers won’t want the story to finish.
Noga Landau, a co-showrunner on the series, confirmed the season 2 finale wasn’t written as a potential series end, even though Kurtzman directed it. She stated they have plenty more story planned and that the finale definitely isn’t the conclusion of the show.

I’m a huge sci-fi, fantasy, and animation fan, and I also get to write about it for a living! I’ve been published in places like Empire, Digital Spy, and SciFiNow – a bunch of different publications, actually. And honestly, I will always defend ‘The Mummy’ from 1999 – it’s a total 90s classic, in my opinion.
