Noga Landau and Gaia Violo, the executive producers of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, are hoping Paramount+ will renew the show for a third season. Landau shares showrunning duties with Alex Kurtzman, while Violo created the series and co-wrote the eighth episode, “The Life of the Stars,” with Jane Maggs.
Filming for season two of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy finished on Tuesday, February 24th, after more than six months of work. Season one is nearing its final episode, which will be available on Paramount+ starting March 12th. Production will now shift to editing and finishing the ten episodes of season two.
Noga Landau and Gaia Violo, executive producers of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, recently spoke with ScreenRant’s John Orquiola right after the season 2 wrap party. They talked about the remaining work on the season and expressed their desire to continue the show. You can find their comments below.
Congratulations on finishing season two! I saw pictures from the wrap party on Instagram. Now that post-production is underway, everyone is hoping for season three, and even season four, to be approved, right?
Gaia Violo: Yes, yes, for sure,
Absolutely. We still have a lot of work ahead of us for season two, which we just finished filming. We actually made both seasons one and two back-to-back, which was a huge undertaking, but really enjoyable. It was great to keep the energy going from season one into season two, and everyone was celebrating last night with big hugs!
We’re finally starting to recover now that filming has wrapped. It was a really long shoot – we began in August and finished early Tuesday morning, with a wrap party last night. It’s always a bit sad, though. The cast and crew become like a family, and I actually spend more time with them than my own family! I’m excited to go home and rest, but we all feel a little sad about saying goodbye and leaving each other. It feels like we all want to stay together, like we want to live in space!
Noga Landau discussed a potential storyline for the third season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, suggesting it could involve Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (played by Mary Wiseman), whose appearance in episode 8 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy may be a clue.
In an interview, Tilly mentioned being stationed with third-year cadets in the Beta Quadrant. This has led to speculation that if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds gets a third season, the show might move to a new location, and Tilly could have a more prominent role.
We really enjoy exploring the Beta Quadrant. While we haven’t spent much time there yet – we’ve primarily focused on the Alpha Quadrant because it’s near Earth – we’re excited about its potential. For the first two seasons, our stories centered around San Francisco. We’ve established that Tilly has been training a group of Starfleet cadets – the ones we first saw on Discovery – for the past couple of years. They’re now nearing graduation and gaining practical experience in the field. Starfleet Academy emphasizes hands-on learning, and the Beta Quadrant provides a great setting for these cadets to apply what they’ve learned.
Following Skydance Media’s purchase of Paramount Global, Paramount+ has greenlit two more seasons of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and the final two seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Filming for both shows is now finished, and the new episodes are expected to begin airing in late 2026 for season four of Strange New Worlds, and probably in 2027 for both series.
Despite having 28 new episodes of Star Trek coming up – including the final 2 episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, 10 episodes in season 2, and 16 episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (split between seasons 4 and 5) – the long-term future of Star Trek on Paramount+ is now uncertain.
Now that season two of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has finished, there are currently no new Star Trek shows being made – a first in nine years, since filming began on Star Trek: Discovery in January 2017. With the contract for Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout, who oversee Star Trek on Paramount+, ending in 2026, the future of the franchise is uncertain.
Fans are eagerly waiting to hear Paramount Global’s plans for the future of Star Trek on Paramount+, including whether new shows are in development. Alex Kurtzman has discussed a four-year vision for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, aiming to portray a complete college experience. Everyone is hoping Paramount+ will renew Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for seasons 3 and 4.
