Despite the recent conclusion of its first season, the streaming performance of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy remains weak. The show isn’t currently among the ten most-watched programs on Paramount+.
While not a huge hit everywhere, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is gaining some international attention. It currently ranks 10th on Paramount+’s global television chart, according to FlixPatrol.
This is another worrying development for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. While the show’s ratings haven’t been consistent, the most recent trend is particularly concerning.
The show is currently secure for the near term. However, with viewership numbers in mind, Paramount and Skydance will likely be carefully evaluating how well the show is performing before deciding if Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will get a third season.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Future Is Uncertain
Despite some initial challenges with audience scores, the series is well-received by critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a “Certified Fresh” rating with 88% positive reviews from critics, while viewers give it a 42% positive rating. This discrepancy led to some questioning whether the show would continue.
Recent changes in ownership at Paramount and the potential departure of Alex Kurtzman raise questions about the future of Star Trek. While a second season of the current show is being filmed, its long-term survival is unclear. However, Star Trek has a history of bringing back characters and storylines even after shows end—characters from the original TOS returned years after their series finale, and the TNG crew reunited decades later. Each new creative team builds upon the work of those before them, and based on the first six episodes, Starfleet Academy seems poised to establish a solid base for the Star Trek universe to continue thriving for many years to come.
What Is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy About?
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows a group of young cadets as they strive to achieve their dream of joining Starfleet. The series explores their experiences at the Academy – the friendships they forge, the rivalries that ignite, and their first loves – all while under the guidance of challenging instructors. As they learn what it takes to become officers, they also face a new threat to both the Academy and the Federation.
I’m really excited about the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! Holly Hunter is going to be amazing as the chancellor, and the new cadets – Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard – sound like a great addition. Plus, they’ve got some fantastic supporting actors like Zoë Steiner and Tig Notaro, and of course, Robert Picardo! It’s cool to see Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman making guest appearances, and I’m thrilled Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti are also involved. What a lineup!
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1 is now streaming in full on Paramount+.
