Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Timeline Confirmed In Season 1 Finale

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1’s Finale – “Rubincon”

Okay, so the season one finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy finally clarifies when this series takes place in the timeline, and it’s a little different than I initially thought! Olatunde Osunsanmi directed the episode, and the story was crafted by Alex Kurtzman and Kirsten Beyer, based on an idea from Noga Landau and Gaia Violo. Honestly, it wraps things up nicely – we see Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) finally get his comeuppance, and a lot of the main characters’ storylines get satisfying conclusions. It’s a really feel-good ending, which I appreciated.

The series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy didn’t reveal its timeline in relation to Star Trek: Discovery until the very end of its first season. However, a detail shown early on – Commander Lura Thok’s personnel file – allowed fans to figure out the approximate timeframe. Based on that information, the first class at the rebuilt Starfleet Academy in San Francisco likely began classes in the year 3195, following the events of The Burn.

The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ends by revealing the show actually starts a few years before we initially thought. Hints throughout the season support this, and it also changes how we understand the backstories of Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) and Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), as well as what’s in store for Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Is The Class Of 3196

In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, we follow a group of cadets – Caleb Mir, Genesis Lythe, Jay-Den Kraag, Darem Reymi, Series Mil, Tarima Sadal, and Ocam Sadal – as they finish their studies at Starfleet Academy. The story begins in San Francisco in the year 3192, following the students as they start their final year, culminating in their graduation in 3196.

The series Star Trek: Discovery concluded in 3191, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy begins a year later – 3192 – not four years after, as initially believed. This new timeline requires a revision of when important events occur in the prologue of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s first episode. We learn that Caleb Mir was 21 when he entered Starfleet Academy, meaning he was born in 3171. This also reveals that he was separated from his mother, Anisha Mir (played by Tatiana Maslany), at the age of six in 3177.

In the year 3177, Captain Nahla Ake left Starfleet and began teaching on Bajor, following her decision to imprison Anisha Mir. When Star Trek: Starfleet Academy starts, Nahla is 422 years old and half-Lanthanite, meaning she was born in 2770 and likely attended Starfleet Academy around the beginning of the 2790s.

In the eighth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, “The Life of the Stars,” it’s established that Caleb and his classmates will graduate in 3196. This is revealed through Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (played by Mary Wiseman), who is now teaching third-year cadets. These cadets are the same group of students we first met in season four of Star Trek: Discovery, which took place in 3190. This means Tilly’s students would have been in their third year of training by 3193.

Seeing Commander Lura Thok’s file and birthdate displayed on screen initially suggested that the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy starts in the year 3195. However, the season one finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy contradicts this. It’s possible Lura’s birthdate was an oversight, but the show’s creators have made a few errors regarding established facts within the Star Trek universe.

An error appeared in the Benjamin Sisko Museum exhibit featured in the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode “5”. Captain Sisko’s wife, Kasidy Yates (played by Penny Johnson Jerald), had her name misspelled, and the couple’s child – who Kasidy was pregnant with during the final episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – was completely left off the family’s display.

Will We See Starfleet Academy’s Cadets Graduate In 3196?

The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy covers 300 days, from September 3192 to June 3193, as shown in the episode “300th Night.” Executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau designed each season of the series to follow the structure of a school year.

Good news for fans: filming for season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is finished! That means Caleb, SAM, Darem, Genesis, Jay-Den, Tarima, and Ocam will all return for more adventures, likely starting in early 2027 on Paramount+. However, it’s currently unknown if the show will continue beyond that, leaving the future of these cadets’ Starfleet training uncertain.

The future of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is currently up in the air as Paramount+ decides whether to renew the show for seasons 3 and 4. This uncertainty stems from the recent acquisition of Paramount Global by Skydance Media, creating Paramount Skydance, and impacts the overall direction of Paramount+’s Star Trek television series. Season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was approved before Skydance completed its purchase of Paramount.

Let’s hope the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy does well enough for Paramount+ to order seasons three and four. It would be really disappointing if the show ended before we got to see the cadets – Caleb, Darem, Jay-Den, Genesis, Tarima, SAM, and Ocam – finally graduate and become Starfleet officers in 3196.
