As an ardent fan, I’m genuinely excited about the prospect of wrapping up the incredible journey of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in a satisfying manner. Executive producer and co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman has shared that they have plans for the fifth and final season. This prequel to the classic Star Trek series will be condensed into a six-episode run, deviating from the usual 10 episodes, which was typical for this show. Although we’re yet to see the third season beginning on July 17th, Goldsman and co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers have already mapped out a thoughtful conclusion that makes sense and allows them to tell the story effectively.
In an interview with TrekMovie, Goldsman shared that the final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will conclude with Kirk being promoted to captain and assuming command of the USS Enterprise. This event would lead us right up to where the original Star Trek: The Original Series begins canonically. “We’ll guide the show towards Kirk’s first day of command,” Goldsman explained, “which, by the way, isn’t actually The Original Series. The Original Series starts a bit into Kirk’s command,” he added to the site.
Goldsman further revealed that the higher-ups at Paramount and CBS initially considered ending the show after just four seasons, but eventually agreed to produce an additional sixth-season finale to match the timeline of the original “Star Trek” series.
As a movie enthusiast, I was pleasantly surprised when the creators of “Star Trek: Discovery” decided to call it quits after four seasons. But instead of letting us down, they graciously handed over the reins to explore an era that fans have longed for – the original series. When we expressed our desire to travel back in time, they acknowledged the validity of our request and asked, “What do you need to make it happen?” I boldly requested six episodes, and they agreed without hesitation.
Goldsman went on to say: “The positive aspect is, those responsible for producing this series shared my desire for this development. However, there are financial limitations that are genuine. You’re aware of the situation at Paramount. Therefore, progressing under such circumstances required a significant effort by everyone involved, as no one wanted a repeat of the Discovery scenario where things felt rushed and incomplete.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Will End Where Star Trek Began
It was revealed earlier this year that the fifth season of “Strange New Worlds” would be its last, but there’s good news: Paramount+ has confirmed that the series will continue beyond its third season. Previously, co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers hinted that the show could directly tie into “The Original Series,” potentially exploring some missing parts of the five-year mission, as the 1966 version started with the mission already in progress.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I find it reassuring that the creators of “Strange New Worlds” have already mapped out an ending for the series, ensuring a well-rounded conclusion to the story. This forethought prevents the disappointment felt by fans when shows like “Discovery” didn’t wrap up as satisfactorily as we had hoped.
