IDW’s Star Trek: The Last Starship has been a huge hit. This new series, set far in the future after the Federation has fallen, quickly sold out its first issue and received positive reviews for both its first two installments. The third issue continues the strong start, raising the stakes and delivering unexpected twists for readers.

Issue #3 of Star Trek: The Last Starship continues the story immediately after the previous installment. The U.S.S. Omega is facing a fierce attack from a dangerous Klingon cult. Realizing her crew is outmatched, Captain Sato hands command over to James T. Kirk, who expertly takes charge. Kirk’s leadership proves invaluable, and while the Omega ultimately wins the battle, it comes at a significant price, with hints of even greater consequences to come.

Overall, Star Trek: The Last Starship #3 is a truly excellent issue. It’s packed with action, and both the story and artwork reflect that energy. It’s great to see Kirk taking charge and doing what he does best. The issue really captures the excitement of a classic Star Trek episode, which is a huge plus. It’s engaging and dynamic, with both the art and writing keeping the story moving forward. The artwork is particularly cinematic, especially during the attack on Earth – it feels both predictable and surprising. The issue ends with a major twist that I won’t reveal, but it feels much larger in scope than the page itself suggests.

The story’s pacing is a bit uneven. While the fast-moving action suits a battle, some scene transitions feel rushed. I occasionally had to reread sections to fully understand what happened, and even then, I wasn’t sure I’d caught everything. However, this disorientation actually works thematically, mirroring the emotional weight of the battle and contributing to the Omega’s win. The victory comes at a significant emotional cost, and we see Captain Sato struggle with the consequences of his actions. This unsettling feeling reflects the chaotic nature of the fight itself.

Wow, issue #3 of Star Trek: The Last Starship is just fantastic! This series is really delivering, and this issue especially upped the ante. The characters are so well-developed, and honestly, I think this is the best Star Trek story we’ve had in years. I’m completely hooked and can’t wait to see what happens next!
