Star Trek’s Best Series in Years is Officially Getting a New Sequel

It’s clear that the future of Star Trek is currently uncertain. While Paramount has stated the franchise remains a priority and is planning a new movie reboot, details are scarce. We’ll see more of the current shows with new seasons of Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy before things quiet down, leaving fans in a bit of a waiting period. While more Star Trek projects will likely be announced eventually, it’s unusual that there’s nothing currently in production for television. Fortunately, there’s another Star Trek universe to enjoy, and recent news about it is especially promising.

IDW’s 2025 comic, Star Trek: Red Shirts, was a hit, offering a fresh and engaging take on the often-overlooked security officers of Starfleet. The five-issue series, created by Christopher Cantwell and Megan Levens, was critically acclaimed. When it finished in December, fans were eager for more. Now, it’s confirmed that a sequel will arrive in July 2026, almost a year after the original. Star Trek: Red Shirts – Ghost of the 21st Century will be written by Gerry Duggan, with art by Scott Buoncristiano. Simply put, one of the best new Star Trek comics in recent years is getting a sequel with a talented creative team.

Star Trek: Red Shirts – Ghost of the 21st Century Continues The Redemption of Star Trek’s Whipping Boys

The comic series Star Trek: Red Shirts aimed to tell the stories of often-overlooked characters, playfully referencing the tradition of security officers who frequently died on missions. Now, the upcoming Ghost of the 21st Century seems to be taking that idea even further, hinting at an even more grim fate for these familiar characters. The official description suggests things will be even worse than just a quick death for the ‘Red Shirts’.

Let me tell you, this story is gripping! It’s about how getting even isn’t always immediate – sometimes it takes a long time to come around. It all goes down on the very edge of Federation space, and it quickly becomes clear that those ‘red shirt’ security officers aren’t just cannon fodder – they’re being used. I’m following this guy, Harry Deubert, a regular security grunt who stumbles onto something huge when he finds hidden contraband on a fallen crewmate. Turns out there’s this secret Starfleet division, Section Null, that’s turning these disposable officers into tools in a massive criminal plot. He teams up with an Andorian officer, Lyna Taval, who has her own secrets, and they start digging…and digging too deep makes them targets. It seems someone within Starfleet Security is betraying the Federation. Once Deubert and Taval figure out what’s really happening with those red shirts, their lives will never be the same. It’s a wild ride!

John Duggan recently shared more about the upcoming new book in the Red Shirts series, teasing that it will significantly impact the world of Star Trek. He explained the story involves a secret Romulan plan to disrupt the Federation, and his character will be happily involved in causing chaos. Duggan promises a fun, action-packed adventure. While some Star Trek fans haven’t enjoyed recent trends of analyzing and relying on nostalgia, Red Shirts struck a good balance, and this new installment seems to take things to the next level. If you haven’t read Star Trek: Red Shirts yet, it’s worth checking out. Keep an eye out for Ghost of the 21st Century, which will be released on July 22nd, with preorders starting on June 15, 2026.
