Michael Sussman, a writer and producer from Star Trek, recently shared ambitious plans for a new spinoff series focusing on Captain Jonathan Archer of the NX-01, played by Scott Bakula in Star Trek: Enterprise. At the Star Trek Las Vegas convention over the weekend, Sussman disclosed details about the show’s concept, confirming that Bakula is set to reprise his role. He also discussed the lengthy development process and the unfortunate timing that initially led Paramount to decline the project. However, with the recent approval of their merger with Skydance, Sussman hopes that the parent company will reconsider their decision, especially if there’s fan excitement for the series he’s tentatively naming Star Trek: United.
Enterprise,” which is a prequel taking place approximately 100 years before “The Original Series.” Captain Archer commands Earth’s inaugural Warp Five starship, christened the “Enterprise.” Given that the show serves as a prequel, fans often ponder the fates of these characters after the conclusion of “Enterprise,” and Sussman addressed this curiosity in an on-screen summary during his final episode.
In the episode “In A Mirror, Darkly, Part II,” a depiction is shown where Captain Archer ascends to the position of Admiral in Starfleet before eventually retiring and pursuing a career in politics. He ultimately achieves the highest political office, serving as President of the United Federation of Planets. Sussman and Bakula aim to establish the series Star Trek: United during this period, focusing on the life and exploits of President Jonathan Archer.
The story is a blend of political suspense and family drama, taking place during the tumultuous early years of the Federation, as explained by Sussman to TrekMovie. After investing 98 hours into ‘Enterprise’, Bakula felt he thoroughly developed his character, but this new direction for Archer offered something fresh and captivating that he found appealing.
Sussman expressed that one of his hopes is for the series to have the impact on ‘Star Trek’ that ‘Andor’ had on ‘Star Wars’. He believes it’s a show that allows for mature storytelling about grown-up characters and presents these stories in a down-to-earth, realistic manner.
Sussman presented his concept to Star Trek producer Alex Kurtzman and his production company Secret Hideout, where it was warmly received. This led to meetings with CBS Studios and Paramount+, but progress halted when Paramount had to cut back on spending in their streaming sector. However, as per the new CEO of Paramount, David Ellison, this situation may improve after the Skydance merger, potentially offering Sussman another opportunity.
For now, revealing this new concept to fans has led to plenty of discussion on social media and forums, which could potentially aid in presenting the show’s potential success in the future. However, it remains uncertain if or when Star Trek: United will progress, but as of now, you can catch up with Enterprise on Paramount+.
