Star Trek’s New Era Is Reversing a 20-Year Trend (& That’s Great)

Representation from the recently combined Paramount Skydance Corporation recently shared their vision for the future of their entertainment company, covering both high-level strategies and detailed aspects. During a press conference last week, they spoke about several major properties, but it appears that the Star Trek franchise could particularly benefit from this merger. The corporation is planning significant changes in its streaming strategy, with executive Dana Goldberg revealing that a substantial investment will be made into the Star Trek franchise. What’s more intriguing is her statement that the barriers between streaming and movie productions will be eliminated for the first time in decades, potentially granting unparalleled resources from Paramount to Starfleet.

According to Variety’s report, Goldberg, who serves as both co-chair of Paramount Pictures and chair of Paramount Television, stated that “Star Trek” is of utmost importance for the entire company. He stressed that there will be no division between discussions about television and movie plans, suggesting a unified approach towards “Star Trek.

This triumph significantly boosts the “Star Trek” universe, long plagued by internal disputes over the past few years. In its heyday when “Star Trek” was a television sensation for CBS, it was only logical for CBS’ corporate parent Paramount to leverage this success, resulting in blockbuster films such as “The Wrath of Khan.” However, the division between Paramount and CBS in 2006 led to Paramount’s film trilogy from 2009 to 2016 lacking alignment with the television realm at that time.

In current terms, many movie enthusiasts are still annoyed by the way these films are positioned within the series, as they exist in an alternate storyline known as the Kelvin timeline.

Enthusiasts of the modern ‘Star Trek’ series on Paramount+ can anticipate some exciting content as the film studio’s prowess supports the ongoing victories of these serials. Notably, the streaming division has consistently churned out popular productions and even managed the critically-acclaimed streaming film, ‘Section 31’.

According to Paramount Skydance’s newly appointed streaming executive Cindy Holland, the company will no longer focus on producing made-for-streaming movies moving forward. While specific plans for the Star Trek franchise are yet to be revealed, this new strategy has already sparked excitement among fans. For now, the Star Trek catalog is available for streaming on Paramount+.
