Star Trek’s Next Villain Is Channeling 4 of The Most Iconic Sci-Fi Bad Guys Of All Time

Star Trek fans are eagerly anticipating the new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. A first look at the show was revealed at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, and even the series’ villain is enthusiastic about the role he’ll play in the story.

Paul Giamatti, who plays the character Nus Braka in the upcoming series, recently described his motivations at CCXP. Braka is a criminal—essentially a pirate and smuggler involved in all sorts of illegal activities. He leads a group called the Vanari Ral, and has traveled extensively throughout the galaxy. Giamatti portrays him as a low-status character with delusions of grandeur who puts on a foolish act to mask his dangerous and psychopathic nature. Interestingly, Giamatti suggests Braka is mean to children because he secretly envies their support systems and wishes he had the same kindness shown to them.

So, Which Villains Inspired Nas Braka?

When discussing how he approached the role of a villain, Giamatti explained that he drew inspiration from several iconic characters. He thought of figures like Khan, Chang, and Gul Ducat – villains who are charismatic and enjoy dominating conversations with endless talk. He also considered the unpredictable energy of Q, aiming to capture that same sense of chaotic power.

Paul Giamatti also shared insights into his character, Nas Braka, and what viewers can anticipate in Starfleet Academy. He described Braka as having a deeply troubled inner child – someone fundamentally damaged and prone to anger, even exhibiting psychopathic tendencies. Giamatti noted this reminded him of characters like Trelane and Q, who also possess a childlike quality. As he developed the role, Giamatti increasingly focused on portraying Braka as emotionally stunted, essentially frozen at a young age.
