Despite being set centuries after Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation, beloved characters from those shows are reappearing in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. While Robert Picardo’s character, The Doctor from Voyager, has already been making appearances, a recent episode of the Paramount+ series brought back another familiar face. This was a particularly exciting surprise for fans of Captain Benjamin Sisko and the crew of Deep Space Nine.
In the fifth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Cirroc Lofton returned as Jake Sisko, thanks to the character SAM investigating what happened to his father, Ben Sisko. Fans noticed Jake was wearing Bajoran jewelry during his appearance, suggesting what he’s been up to since the end of Deep Space Nine. Lofton explained that the earring was a deliberate choice, meant to show Jake honoring his father’s legacy by studying Bajoran culture and incorporating it into his own identity. The creative team wanted to visually hint at this personal journey.
Jake’s Big Star Trek Return

Lofton explained the details of his outfit, highlighting its connection to his Star Trek character’s return to the Federation. He shared that the outfit included a Bajoran earring and was made from Ethiopian fabric he’d brought back from a recent trip. He collaborated with the costume department to adapt the fabric’s patterns into a futuristic Star Trek design, resulting in a fantastic look that included a sash and a collared shirt.
The entire experience felt special. It meant a lot to me personally, as a tribute to Avery, and to finally give fans the resolution they’d been hoping for after the series ended. They really wanted to know what happened to Jake and his father, and this provided that closure for them.
Even though the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has just begun, Paramount has already confirmed they’re making a second season. While we don’t know when the new season will be released, this shows the studio believes in this new version of the Star Trek universe. After Skydance and Paramount merged last year, many fans were concerned about the future of Star Trek, but the continuation of Starfleet Academy suggests there’s plenty more to come.
