Star Wars Adds a Polarizing Marvel Figure in Surprise Cameo for New Movie

It’s common for Star Wars films to feature cameos by well-known people. These appearances started with subtle jokes in the original movies – like the appearance of Ralph McQuarrie in The Empire Strikes Back which fans didn’t notice for years. This tradition continued in the prequels with George Lucas and his children making background appearances, and in the newer films with stars like Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, and even composer John Williams. These cameos are usually brief and fit naturally into the scenes, but they happen in almost every Star Wars film.

The trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu finally dropped this morning, giving fans a first look at new scenes and a hint of the movie’s storyline. It also sparked excitement about a possible cameo, with many believing a new alien character is voiced by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. The character’s voice and even its eyebrows strongly suggested Scorsese’s involvement, and it’s now been confirmed that he is indeed lending his voice to the role.

Martin Scorsese Has a Star Wars Cameo (to the Delight of Marvel Fans)

Fans are excited to learn, thanks to confirmation from Disney and ComicBook, that Martin Scorsese voices the Ardennian character featured at the beginning of the The Mandalorian & Grogu trailer. While it might seem unexpected to hear Scorsese in the Star Wars universe, he has a connection to the franchise. He’s previously worked with the show’s director, Jon Favreau (who appeared in Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street), and, crucially, he’s been a longtime friend of Star Wars creator George Lucas. Lucas even presented Scorsese with the Best Director Oscar, standing alongside fellow filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg.

Interestingly, Jon Favreau voiced Rio Durant, one of the last characters from the Ardennian species seen in a Star Wars film—he appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story. While there’s no direct evidence linking that character to the one Favreau is playing in the new film, Star Wars often features family ties between characters, so it’s a possibility.

So, the news of Martin Scorsese directing a Star Wars movie has, unsurprisingly, brought all those comments he made about Marvel back into the spotlight. Back in 2019, he admitted he tried watching those films and just didn’t see them as cinema – he compared them to experiences you’d find at a theme park, which, understandably, caused quite a stir. He tried to clarify things, but the conversation really stuck. Now, with him involved in The Mandalorian & Grogu, people are pointing to that old statement as ironic. But honestly, at 83, I think he’s probably just evolved his perspective, and maybe we all should too.
